Show 4 B THE RICHFIELD REAPER It's In The Bookmobile Wednesday June 22 1994 Christensen Librarian By Douglas D Just who is Wm Faulkner? One of those names from literature that By Vi Blake Dear Vi: Why must we buy two kinds of soap for washing dishes one for hand washing another for the dishwashing machine? Dicdra Billings Idaho Falls Ida Well let me tell you my experience About 10 years ago noting that the per pound price of low suds laundry detergent was far less than dishwasher detergent I started using it In fact I even recommended this to you my readers as a way to save money Then to my chagrin our dishwasher started to leak "What kind of detergent are you using?" asked the repairman That was the problem Even though the laundry detergent was supposed to be "low suds" it was not suitable The water action in a dishwasher you see is very important Suds smother the action and in our case this caused the machine to leak So as with most appliances it's best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations Which reminds me the manufacturers of many of the new vinyl floor coverings advise cleaning them with only water or a mild vinegar solution — no soap detergent or other cleaning agents A woman I know insisted on using detergent Couldn't get her floor clean enough without it she said Her flooring is dull while others in the same housing development are still bright and shiny So the bottom line is: do what the manufacturer recommends It’s their business to know what's best for their products Dear Vi: I just learned this interesting way to utilize the remaining heat in an oven alter you turn it off Shortly before you plan to turn the oven off beat two egg whites until foamy and cup of gradually add two-thirsugar and a dash of salt Continue beating until stiff peaks form add a teaspoon of vanilla and continue beating until very stiff Fold in a cup of chopped nuts a package of chocolate chips and a cup of enspy rice cereal Drop by teaspoons full d cookie sheet on a Remove whatever you're cooking from the oven which should be set at 350 degrees Put the cookies in and turn off the oven Wait for two hours — no peeking Results: cookies scrumptious macaroon-lik- e Addie Devereaux St George This reminds me of a way to "cook" prunes Wash a pound of prunes place them in a quart bottle fill bottle with water and screw down the lid Let stand in the refrigerator for 24 hours turn bottle upside down (be sure it doesn't leak) and wait another 24 hours The prunes will be plump and the juice rich and sweet In fact the longer you let them stand the heavier the syrup will be voracious worms 'go out to graze" off Helps control foot odor too Dear Vi: Sometimes it's difficult to slip a child's sweaty bare feet into sandals especially in summer but not if you rub them top and bottom with talcum powder This helps for grow nups too Barbara Hurst Las Vegas Cornstarch works just as well as talcum powder Barbara No fragrance but you can t beat the price Be sure to take some along when you visit the sand dunes or the beach It makes the sand roll right Thought For The Day: The job hasn t been invented yet that is all peaches and cream But even if a job is sometimes difficult frustrating or boring we can still get a great deal of satisfaction by doing it well you almost remember If he seems vaguely important somewhere just otf the stage of what you know tor sure you are not alone To dust off a little comer of the answer the Faulkner book "As I Lay Dying" is now available on Audio Tape This copy is from "Books on Tape" in its unedited Now lets talk about version whether or not it's worth trying After all you don't have to be in a university course to improve your mind and broaden your viewpoint As this story proceeds it is like watching a picture puzzle come together Some books unfold like a scroll or a roll of paper towels But in this story Faulkner seems to finger each piece before fitting them together That makes it an interesting mental challenge Picture in your mind a stage w ith several actors seated on stools No Readers this is
