help fight a wild fire near Gunnison 40-ac- re suppression techniques Trainees attend 40 hours of instruction which includes three days in the classroom and two days in the field They study fire behavior standards for survival line location and construction aviation safety mop-u- p procedures engine operation and tool usage and safety The school staff tries to make the field exercise resemble an actual fire situation as much as possible but within controlled safety parameters "Fire school is a good experience for trainees" said incident commander Kelly Allen "it’s realistic enough to help them in a true fire setting" An objective of the school is to give students the necessary confidence and skills needed for when they're sent to an actual fire Crews learn when fighting a fire to always have an escape route and safety zone They learn never to fight a fire without determining both essential items and making sure everyone on the line knows where the escape routes and safety
