PER PERSON INCLUDING AIRFARE FROM SALT LAKE CITY DOUBLE OCCUPANCY s THE DRIVER in a car touring France must bear a f- - watchful eye, and maintain a quick reflex to cope with the famed kamikazes of f! Gaul. L i Still, the man at the wheel may not be the busiest per- son in an automobile loaded with baggage and rubber-neckThat distinction falls to the navigator who must juggle a combination of maps and books, choosing, sometimes on an instants ) notice, the best roads, the most interesting sights to see, the best restaurants in .which to dine, and the most comfortable pad at night. Woe to him who goofs. The' thunder of his dearest friends will be instantly j3 s. , . upon him. use three I navigational aids: a regional map of France published by Miche-lin- , the same companys regional green guides, and its fat red guide. FRANCE MUST be the and charted j .tourist country in the world. There are 37 sectional maps .of France which are not given away free as they are I at gas stations in the U.S., but available at 75 cents. Its well worth it. The most useful fillip of i the road maps is the desid gnation cfjpi 'f&ionsjnost a road scenic routes, marked in green. Major and minor highways and back roads are otherwise marked m red, yellow or black. Maps also have designations that indicate the location of chateux, panoramic of viewpoints, churches restaunote, rants, ruins, gas stations, and telephones from which the motorist with a broken-dow- n car can call for help. Travelers whose French is rusty or might bring along a small pocket French-Englisdictionary since the meaning of the maps symbols are given in French. non-scen- h GETTING IN and out of big cities is always a problem for the motorist. Miehelin solves it by marking each entry and exit road into a metropolis with numbers. Upon approaching a town, the navigator switches to the famed red guide which gives a city plan for virtually every settlement in France where the traveler might encounter trouble. The entrance and exit numbers on the sectional map correspond with the town plans in the red guide. The red guide is a masterpiece among tourist publications. Aside from, the . .town, plans,. it! gives- cap- - sulized information about each center of population, including a starred evaluation of its principal sights to see. It is most famous, however, for its evaluation of restaurants on which it bestows stars which are as coveted as a Nobel Prize. The current guide lists 534 restaurants worthy of one star, 60 with two stars (which it considers worth a detour), and 16 with three stars. A three-sta- r restau- rant, in its estimation, is worth a special trip. THIS YEAR when prices will be a strong consideration for Americans whose dollar has twice been devalued, the guide has ferreted out 359 restaurants which serve moderately priced meals. A moderately priced meal at the current dollar exchange can be figured at between $3.50 and 5. . Finally, there are the green guides which are r handbooks dealing with touring and cultural information. There are currently 18 green guides for France, (only five in English) and lately Riviera, Normandy and Brittany are available in English, the Miche-lpeople have burst the borders of France publish: iftg- - green guides br English soft-cove- for Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, and even New York City. They are considering invading Florida, California and New England. A green guide for London is almost (in English and ready French), and another on is French) (in Spain coming. RED GUIDES have been produced for Germany, Italy, and Spain. Next year there will be a red guide for Great Britain. It will not award any stars to British restaurants, not because the cuisine is considered below standard, but because any eating place needs five years of surveillance by Miehelin inspectors before it can even be considered for a coveted decoration. dozen professional restaurant inspectors crisscross France every year, covering at least 5,000 restaurants. About 100,000 letters of recommendation or condemnation come in from readers every year. WOULD MICHELIN ever consider doing a red guide on Americas restaurants? An official of Michelins, tourist services told me, habWe havent the itude. Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, Although it has even actually happened that I ate well in New York.
