Show HILLTOP TIMES Maintain your weight, gain a prize TIMES November 26, 2008 BY ROGER BRANER 75th Force Support Squadron Fitness director T he holiday season may bring gifts and good tidings, but it also delivers high calorie feasts and decreased activity due to changes in the weath- er. Numerous reports suggest the average person gains between seven and 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's. According to surveys, on average, people report a five pound gain during this time of year. However, recent studies now indicate the average weight gain during the winter holidays is just one pound. Although a one pound gain is certainly better news than the 10 pounds previously reported, the problem is most people don't ever lose the pound of weight they put on during the holidays, according to The New England Journal of Medicine. To curb the potential for Airmen to adopt unhealthy habits during the holiday season, the Fitness Center and the Health and Wellness Center have teamed up with corporate sponsors Gatorade and Life Fitness to create the inaugural Holiday Maintain campaign. The main goals of the campaign are to give incentives for Team Hill to not put on any weight, and perhaps encourage members to lose weight if necessary, while giving the participants weekly opportunities to give themselves a better understanding of health topics. The Warrior Health and Fitness Center will provide many classes each week which range on subject matter from interactive aerobics to learning about keeping one's cholesterol levels intact. Each participant who successfully maintains his or her weight throughout the one month campaign period will be eligible for a drawing to be held Jan. 9. The top two prizes to be given away at the drawing include a Life Fitness Cross Trainer elliptical machine and a Snowbasin Ski Resort annual ski pass. To increase one's chances of being selected in the drawing, attending each campaign-sponsored class gives the participants an opportunity to place their names one or two additional times in the drawing. Additionally, those who sign up as a team receive one additional chance based on the number of team members, as long as all members maintain their weight. Sign-ups and initial weigh-ins will end after Nov. 27.
