No running? Were missing Teen Angel for this? Because while it might be the holitime for charity and day season understanding and all that one inescapable fact deserves consideration along with the Jazzs 111-8victory over Golden State on Friday PJ GAME AT A lst-ha- Next: Tonight Utah at LA Clippers 8 30 p m here Golden State has lost 12 of its 13 games this season as well as five straight games against the Jazz and on Friday looked thoroughly incapable of even running down the floor You say some teams dont have any quit in them? Well the Warriors have so much theyre sending it out with the Christmas cards Not that it bothered the Jazz much They built a lead and full-spee- d 2 cruised though they did throw in a bit of a swoon in the fourth quarter just to stay consistent They didnt put up a huge fight said Jazz center Greg Foster And when we got ahead we didn't put up a fight ourselves Thats not a lot of jubilation considering the victory was the Jazzs third in a row and gave them an record and a share of the Midwest Division lead for the first time all season entering tonights game against the Clippers in Los Angeles But that was hardly foremost in Coach Jerry Sloans mind He still is trying to inspire his team to play hard and well for an entire game and suggested the Jazz came perilously close to replicating their second-half collapse against Minnesota on Monday If theyd made a couple of baskets in the third quarter wed have been in the same situation said Sloan He can be grateful at least that his players dont mutiny Thats the big problem at Golden State where guard Latrell Sprewell is at constant odds with new coach 8-- 6 See JAZZ Page BY JAY DREW THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE A good Thanksgiving dinner and the chance to beat an old rival made the Jordan Beetdiggers a different basketball team Friday night Two days after a sluggish effort against Bingham in their opener the young Beetdiggers played like a totally different team according to coach Hal Hale n in a They swamped Judge Memorial game at Judge to improve their record to 1 I feel a lot better about our intensity said Hale We just didnt have it against Bingham in a 7 home loss Wednesday night Junior forward Jackson Brown led Jordan with 26 points and sophomore guard Morgan Sharp added 18 For Judge Chris McGill drilled seven en route to 27 points Tony Giovacchini one of the states top players added 18 for Judge including 14 in the second half We won because we hustled more said Brown Since Brown and center Mason Smith are their tallest guys at the Diggers will have to rely on hustle and quickness instead of size this year Inexperience could also be a factor since Hale starts three juniors and a sophomore but the coach says Jordan wont be content to play out the season and pin all its hopes on next year Weve got some high expectations for this year he said And why not? Downtown Brown is one of Region 3s most versatile players while Sharp also showed a lot of potential Friday The brother of former Alta star and Tribune MVP Adam Sharp Morgan Sharp helped junior point guard Tyler Rollins handle Judges press and dished out some nice assists We feel like we can battle with most teams this last year year said Hale whose team went Since Jordan moved up to a few years ago the Beetdiggers and Bulldogs dont stage the kind of intense region games like they used to especially in the 1980s But Hale said games with Judge still bring out the best in Jordan BY The Utes preseason nightmare is their postseason dream Funny what a miserable month will do to a college football team that during training camp m August was considered better than the first-yea- r Humanitarian Bowl After losing four of five games during a ghastly stretch at midseason however the University of Utahs bowl hopes apparently hinge on the Big West Conferences party in Boise League champion Utah State is the host team and the Utes want an invitation after they finished with impressive wins over Rice ) and BYU ) non-regio- three-pointe- 6-- 5 (31-14- 3 68 Judge - I 11 18 Mills 4 Isaac 2 Chapman 2 Reed 4 McGill 27 Owens 5 Giovacchini Goals -J- ordan 5 (Rollins Sharp 2 Brown 26 Smith 4 18 Matlon 4 Totals 17 Mills Brown) 20 21 ij 19 - io ig John 7 Totals 21 7-- 4 18 58 21 27 58 Judge 9 (McGill 7 Owens Giovacchini) Tim KellyThe Salt Lake Tribune I Boys Girts Prep Basketball Roundups D-- 4 (20-14- The victory over BYU was the Utes fourth in five years over the Cougars and it prevented Utahs first losing season since 1990 Afterward Coach Ron McBride said I hope this team gets a chance to play one more game Were playing well enough right now that we could beat anybody An overstatement? Perhaps But the fact Utah is reportedly on a short list of teams being considered as a bowl opponent for Utah State shows how well the Utes rebounded from the 4 stretch that dashed their chance of winning the WACs Mountain Division Today the Utes remain one of four teams being considered by the Humanitarian Bowl selection committee A decision is expected soon perhaps even this weekend Cincinnati and Oregon appear to be the favorites Utah and BYU which have already played Utah State but remain attractive to the bowl because of their proximity to Boise are considered likely options Cincinnati finished including wins over Kansas (34-7- ) and Boston College (24-6- ) The Bearcats havent been to a bowl game since 1950 the longest streak in Division football and the school administration is doing its best to end the futility e Cincinnati has offered a basketball series with Boise State as part of its bowl deal In addition the school has guaranteed $450000 in tick- - 5-- studying his play chart to get ready for the New York Giants next series and was not looking as the punt teams streaked down the field in the season opener against the Eagles Suddenly he felt an unexpected tug from behind on his belt that pulled him backward I couldnt understand what was happening Fassel said Watch the gunner warned his son Mike referring to the outside players on the punt coverage team who invariably come flying out of bounds making the sideline a dangerous place Thanks Fassel told his son I could have gotten dusted Fassel the University of Utahs head coach is thankful to have his from 1985-8- 9 son looking out for him this season while he also carries his headset cord In fact Fassel is thankful just to still have his son On a snowy and rainy March day five years ago Mike Fassel then almost 1 1 was involved in a frightening accident at a gym in New Jersey His Morristown little league team had gone indoors to see who was the fastest run ner And when Mike Fassel was near the end of his run there was a ramp there was a table at the end of the ramp he lost control tripped and the table caught him right in the throat with short blond hair standing the Giants coach I really like where the team is traveling get the players he said And I get dad Everything collapsed right back to his spinal column When the paramedics arrived Jim Fassel who was not at the gym said they feared a broken neck Breathing was a problem as Mike was rushed to the hospital He suffered a cracked larynx and dislocated vocal cords Doctors later told Jim Fassel when he was asking if his son would speak again how lucky he was to survive The doctors said give thanks the kid is alive you dont know how close he was to being killed he said It was a fraction of an inch Five years later and after numerous surgical procedures Mike Fassel the youngest of Jim and Kitty Fassels four children breathes at 78 percent of normal and speaks in a low raspy voice that doesnt overcome a loud environment Another son John Fassel is a backup quarterback and wide receiver at Weber State Im not really about it Mike said I never really let it bother me Mike Fassel has become a visible figure at Giants games Hes the young man about 9 Cougs Claim WAC Volleyball Crown right behind it I get to go to be with all to be with my Its fun because as hard as Im working dont get to spend a lot of time with my kids I LAS VEGAS Brigham Young needed five games to upset Hawaii last November in the championship match of the WAC women's volleyball tournament This time was much easier The Cougars won 15-- 6 15-- 6 15-in Friday nights title match at the MGM Grand Garden BYU (27-5- ) No advances to the NCAA Tournament starting next week The pairings and seedings will be announced Sunday BYU swept all three of its tournament matches while No 17 Hawaii (25-7- ) needed five games to defeat Utah and four games to beat Colorado State before going down qui Fassel said Mike is the only one at home now and to have him share in my life and have him around it means everything to me Mike and I are closer I wouldnt trade it for anything When Mike Fassel was injured Jim Fassel was the Giants offensive coordinator After the season Ray Handley was fired and Dan Reeves elected not to retain Fassel He then spent two years with the Broncos one with the Raiders and one with the Cardinals At each stop the Fassels would have to find a new doctor for Mike Coming back to his dream job with the Giants also meant Mike being treated again by his own doctor But coming back to the Giants also brought back the memories for Jim Fassel of that horrible accident and how lucky he was the injury was not fatal Since Im back here and it magnifies it because this is where the injury happened we think about how fortunate we are hes alive and here with us Fassel said 5-- D-- 2 8 etly against the Cougars before a crowd of 2967 Amy Steele Gant the player of the year in the WAC Mountain Division led BYU with 16
