Utah geophysics professor has used global posi- tioning satellites to prove that the Wasatch Front is pulling apart at a rate faster than previously thought The separation is taking place at the rate of three millimeters a year instead of just one millimeter as expected from geological records of the past 10000 years said earthquake researcher Robert Smith The movement Smith said is stretching the Wasatch Fault as if it were a rubber band When it and Smith like others snaps the rebelieves someday it will sult could be a magnitude 75 earthquake Nobody can begin to predict when the quake will occur but Smith says the use of satellite monitoring may someday help seismologists do just that Its hot stuff said Smith of the GPS monitoring research So hot that Smith was fielding calls about it Thursday from The Washington Post and National Geographic Smith has been working on the GPS earthquake research project since 1992 taking infrequent measurements from about 90 sites in Utah and at Yellowstone National Park Now one permanent monitoring site sits above Salt Lake City And a second will soon be located on Mount Ogden Smith said eventually there will be eight permanent monitoring stations that will be capable of pinpointing minute movements of the earth Briefing Next Week On Head Start Funds Federal administrators will have to wait until next week to announce whether the Ogden Area Community Action Agency (OACAA) will keep a $14 million grant Officials at the Head Start regional office in Denver had threatened to yank the money unless northern Utah agencys executive
