After lying peacefully on the lady's lap for some time he sat up and began to lick her neck and ears and as much of her chin as he could get to but of course the lady didn’t encourage that though she laughed very much— as much as I did! Both of us being very fond of animals we began to talk I was told thal the pup had been picked up some miles away in a doorway of an old building There weren’t any homes around there and the pup hadn’t much chance of being adopted by anyone else so this kind young woman took him up in her arms and decided to take him home to play with her cat if she could possibly do that! She said she couldn’t have slept that night if she had left him I know how grand that young lady must have felt as she was him home I’ve felt that way myself My own Rusty Poppy was taking found in the prairies four years ago at the age of two months Rusty wouldn’t have lived he was a very sick little mite and only a good veterinarian cured him No one knows how I would have missed Rusty’s companionship if I hadn’t stopped to get acquainted and given him a trial I wish everyone who hasn’t got a dog would pick up some little fellow and take him in You can’t Imagine what joy both of you would get out of it —dog and owner especially you "kids” you’ve never had a faithful loving little dog tagging after your heels and guarding you you don’t know what it is to be a really happy girl or boy PAGE JOAN BURKE Chicago Illinois 'if Everyone Should Be Able to Swim During the summer months we hear of many casualties and less serious accidents caused by playing near the water or boating Sometimes these things are not avoidable but generally caution and common sense can do away with most dangers In case of trouble or accident we all should be able to swim If in a boat and it overturns one should be able to keep above the water without grabbing for someone else Even if you should haflpen to fall or be pushed into the water you ought to be able to save yourself When I say that everyone should be able to swim I do not mean expertly or professionally but well enough to save yourself in time of need It is nice however to be able to do it gracefully and efficiently It will also be a great factor of amusement to you to be able to swim All your friends probably know how and like you to enter in on their fun "It would only be a nuisance to your friends to have you along if you are unable to swim and are frightened of the water If you want to learn to swim there are many chances waiting for you Some playgrounds offer instructions the local gymnasiums also offer courses If you want to try really hard you can have just your friends help you If everyone would learn to swim there would be far fewer accidents and our vacations would be safer and happier MARY BARKER Ogden Utah Everyone Wants Friends The one thing in the world everyone wants is a true friend Not a friend today and an enemy tomorrow but always a friend Someone to whom you may tell your troubles and know they will understand Someone you can depend on and someone whom you can perfectly trust I imagine everyone wants a special friend but would like many other friends too No one likes the kind of person who pretends to like you and whispers about you the minute your back is turned Let us be true friends to our pals good friends to our friends and kind friends to our enemies!
