Show 1 THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE SUNDAY MORNING Affairs in the Nation Governor Landon?s Strength Not to Be Gauged by Listed Delegates Pre-Conventi- By MARK WASHINGTON June 6 — Discus join of Governor Landon as the Republican presidential nominee is almost the discussion of a past event rather than a future one Gover-nLandon Is closer to this Repub- or c6 to Governor Landon — actually the number of delegates y committed to him is not extraordinarily imbind-lngl- pressive other candidates in the Mark Sullivan past have had more delegates yet failed to get the prize But Governor Landon’s nearness to the nomination does not rest merely on the number of his delegates early in the race he decided not to try for large numbers of delegates and generally not to act as a candidate camconducting a and failed to get It In making this statement I take into account not merely the number of delegates on c JUNE 7 1936 many earnest persons local public officials and individuals have taken the view that the new deal policies are deplorable— but that since the money was being passed out and since the taxpayers must later pay it back they might as well accept ' their share of the beneficence Consideration hjs been given to the fact that Governor Landon has never been a federal official never been a member of congress and therefore presumably has not had experience with federal prdblems Probably that will not weigh much with the public either Calvin Cool-idg- e before he was nominated for vice president and stepped from that office into the presidency had like Governor Landon his only public experience as a governor and holder of minor state offices It was the same with Grover Cleveland One of the points considered in surveying Governor Landon has dwelt on the special qualifications desirable in a Republican candidate at this time Comparison of him as campaigner has been made with Mr Roosevelt It is universally admitted that Governor Landon lacks some of those personal traits which make President Roosevelt an extraordinarily effective campaigner But the truth is the Republicans in their whole field of aspirants and possibilities have no one who can compete with Mr Roosevelt in this respect Accepting that condition the Republicans have concluded they had best make capital out of their lack They think the thing to do Is to present not a competitor of Roosevelt on the president’s own The ground but a contrast to hipcounRepublicans think that if the try is going to turn away from one glamorous personality one "beautiful radio voice" they will not wish to turn to another who is merely less glamorous but rather to one who is utterly simple and without Canadian City Plans to Fete 50th Birthday by Colorful Program VANCOUVER B C (UP)-T- he City of Vancouver which in 50 years has grown from a frontier By ARTHUR L BEELEY Professor of Sociology and Social Education University of Utah Editor’s Note— This Is the fifth of a series of articles written specially for The Salt Lake Tribune on the general subject “Youth in a Changing World" Ever since that obscure English clergyman Thomas R Malthus in 1798 formulated his famous essay of the “Principles of Population” td the effect that “the power of population is Indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man” it has been increasingly clear that the improvement and welfare of society are inextricably bound up with the question of population Malthus however did not anticipate the effects of science and invention —especially medical science — upon the size and composition of human populations Little did he realize that within a hundred and fifty years a society would evolve made up largely of adults An Aging Society The marked changes that have taken place in the size and composition of the American population constitute without'' question the most significant fact in our social history Next only in importance to the increase in numbers has been the phenomenal change in the age of our population composition These trends are clearly revealed in the table which accompanies this article from which it will be seen that in 1850 over 50 per cent of the entire population was under 20 years of age whereas at the present time it is only about 30 per cent It will be noted also Jhat from about 1900 the proportion of persons over 40 years of age has increased at the expense of those under 20 Assuming that present trends will continue it appears therefore that by 1980 over 60 per cent of the American population will be made up of persons over 40 years of age The three fundamental reasons for this remarkable change in the age composition of the American people are First the Increase in the average length of life second the reduction in the birth rate and tember 7 third immigration A million tourists are expected The increase in the average length to participate in the festivities of life is clearly seen in the folEvery part of the British empire lowing comparison of the median and many foreign nations have (average) ages of all classes in the been invited to send delegations United States from 1820 to 1930: Australia will be represented officially by the premiers of several states and England’s delegation will be headed by the lord mayor of London France the United States Britain and Germany will dispatch warships to visit the port during the jubilee Probably the greatest and most elaborate spectacle of the celebrations will be the presentation of the Romance of Vancouver” pageant during which the progress of Vancouver from its foundation to the present day will be portrayed in 50 brilliant scenes on a huge revolving stage for four weeks by a cast settlement nestling amid stately trees to a modern city of towering buildings will celebrate its golden ubllee this summer with one of the most colorful programs of festivities ever witnessed in Canada In 1886 Vancouver was a typical pioneer town with crudely built homes standing in clearings in virIn the same year gin forest great fire swept the settlement leaving it in ruins It was on these ruins that the present great city was founded and flourished into one of the leading cities and ports in Canada occupying 180 square miles with a population of more than 300000 Vancouver today Is the capital of one of the greatest lumbering fishing and mining provinces in Canada Last year British Columbia produced nearly $57000000 worth of timber products more than worth of fish and $47807-15- 7 in minerals Vancouver harbor handled 6339636 tons of cargo along its 96 miles of waterfront Vessels from virtually every corner of the earth visit the port every year To mark this steady program and its fiftieth birthday the city will don holiday garb and embark on two months of festivities The program will include military and aerial displays fairs pageants social events an elaborate program of sports and numerous exhibitions The festivities are scheduled to open officially July 1 but many im portant events including Eucharistic congress and an athletic ’ musical and tavalcade demonstration by 20J00 School children will take place before that date The celebrations will end on Sep- Migration to From Utah Thiefs Activity Evidence That Sleuths’ Work Is in Vain at Times POPULATION CHANGES 45 40 40 LIVING IN VTAM&ORN LLiLX tlLR Ltn 05 50 LIVING
