MONUMENT TO BRAHMS marble statue of D st ngu shed corn com poser anve led in vienna vienna austria A few weeks ago there was unveiled the first monument in vienna to johannes brahms the fa acus musician and composer it stands in the karis karls platz through which the musician walked whenever he hie went into the city and in plain 46 0 view of the windows of the house in which he lived for so many years and where he died the ceremony of the unveiling was performed by the deputy burgomaster dr in the presence of a great number of aromi nent musical people and of the mem bers hers of the brahms society which raised the funds for the memorial the sculptor was prof artistically considered the work meets with much criticism the gen eral conception of the monument and the figure of brahms are highly praised specially the portraiture la Is said to be deiy impressive in its likeness to the original but the lower patt part of the monument representing a muse touching a lyre is very severely criticized criticised and even ridiculed the posture of the muse and the inspru ment are both according to the cri crit les simply impossible three kinds of stone have been em aloyed the chief figure is executed in a white laasen baasen marble the muse la acs bm brahms monument recently unveiled in vienna carrara marble and the pedestal la in I 1 stone brahms died in april 1897 he ile was born in hamburg ger I 1 many but spent the greater part of his life in austria and it wag was here that he won his greatest triumphs as a composer
