Show Volume X Issue V THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 9 June 15, 2004 Valley Day in the Canyon— People enjoy themselves yesterday in sports and other amusements Note: This news article appeared in the Ogden Standard on August 15, 1903 and was submitted by Bette Fuller. The first annual Valley Day picnic was held at the Oaks yesterday afternoon. Potter Bros., the genial landlords of the Oaks, have decided to make this an annual event, a gala day for the residents of Ogden Valley. They left nothing undone in their preparations to show the valley crowd a good time. The grove was beautifully decorated. In front of the grove was an arch, bearing the words, “Welcome Ogden Valley,” worked in evergreen. Their attempts to please the immense crowd were appreciated as everyone had a splendid time. The principal events of the day were races, the baby competitions, recitation contest, etc. At 3 o’clock the married ladies’ race of sixty yards was called on with the following entries: Mrs. I. Ferrin, Mrs. O. M. Froerer, Mrs. [named blocked out] Ririe, Mrs. L. Chambers, Mrs. L. Shupe, Mrs. A. Schade, Mrs. E. Walker, Mrs. I. Ferrin, of Huntsville, winning by twenty yards and thereby secured the beautiful set of china cups and saucers given by Mrs. C. S. Potter. Then came the sixty yard race for single ladies with the following starters: Miss Lucie Shupe, Miss Clara Ritter, Miss Bell Walker, Miss L. Bingham, Miss Ella Fuller, Miss Myrtle Ririe, Miss Israce Wilbur— Miss Wilbur winning first prize and a fivepound box of candy, given by the ShupeWilliams Co. Then came the banner event of the day, the tug of war. It was a hard-fought contest between the married and single men. The married men, however, were too much for the husky boys. They secured the first two pulls in one and one-half and two minutes respectively. Each of the winners was given as a prize a fine bottle of Old Crow whiskey. The following were the contestants: Single Men—J. F. Colvin, Carl Peterson, J. E. Shupe, Ed Wangsgard, J. N. Fackrell, N. Willard, R. Ferrin, T. Wallwark, Sam Lofgreen, David Wansgard, H. Ritter, E. Ferrin. Married Men—E. Fuller, P. Shupe, James Shupe, Ike Shupe, J. Fuller, John Yearsley, Joe Southwick, R. Colvin, John Burt, John Stallings, Mat Burnett, Dan Walker. Another hard-fought contest was the 100 yards dash for single men. It brought out some fast men. The following were the entries: E. Allen, J. Shupe, S. Lofgreen, E. Wansgard, J. N. Fackrell, W. Willard. W. Willard of Huntsville cracked a surprise by winning the race in the remarkable time of eleven seconds and received as a prize, a case of beer, given by the Becker Brewing Company. After this race had been run off the sports from Eden came along with a purse and a runner named Fuller, whom they wished to match against Willard and a purse. Willard again showed that he was there with the goods, and defeated his man in eleven and a half seconds. The race for boys under 15 brought out five runners, Parley Farrell of Eden won. As a prize he was given a pearl handle knife. Next came the egg and spoon race for men over 40. H. Froerer of Eden was the only starter to finish with the egg on his spoon. He received a box of Columbia Club Perfectoes given by Max Davidson. The recitation contest brought out several good contestants and the judges Mrs. Fernlund, Mrs. Knoth, Mrs. Horrocks and Mr. W. D. Bratz, found it a difficult task to pick a winner. First prize (six handkerchiefs, given by W. H. Wright & Sons) was given to Ethel Ririe of Eden, and second to Annie Nelson. The winner spoke “The Perplexed Housewife.” Then came the baby competition with E. F. Bratz, T. H. Carr and J. E. Davenport as judges. The following babies were entered: Wangsgard, Goeld, Chas, Stallings, Southwick, Burnett, Ferrin, D. Stallings, Slater, and Schad. Mrs. Chas Stallings’ baby was given first prize (six silver teaspoons), and that of Mrs. Burnett was given second, (an electro silver cup), given by the Oaks. Now came the contest for the best looking family, with the same judges as the baby contest. The following families were entered: Chas, Stallings, P. R. Shupe, L. H. Froerer, S. S. Ferrin, K. Farrewl, and G. Ririe. L. H. Froerer was given first and two cases of soda water; E. Farrewl was given second and a box of candy by the judges. The last contest was for the best looking single lady. Both Huntsville and Eden were well represented with fair and pretty girls. The following were the entries: Clara Ritter, Lucie Shupe, Myrtle Ririe, Bell Walker, R. Bingham, Glida Shupe, Esther Fuller, Millie Shupe, Laura Walker, Grace Wilbur, Emma Wilcox. The judges, Mr. E. F. Bratz, Mr. J. E. Davenport, T. H. Carr, picked Miss Myrtle Ririe as the best looking lady. She received as a prize a silk umbrella, given by a bachelor. Second was given to Miss Bingham and third to Millie Shupe. Mr. J. E. Davenport was judge of finish for the races and W. D. Bratz was the starter and had the management of the races and contests.
