Show Volume IX Issue X THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 7 March 1, 2004 Work To Begin-Ogden Valley Pathways Master Plan becomes reality “We believe that non-motorized pathways in Ogden Valley help to maintain and enhance its beauty, pastoral atmosphere, rural lifestyle, outdoor recreational opportunities, and sense of community. Therefore, we envision a network of pathways linking all of Ogden Valley enabling residents, visitors, and their children to travel in safety on foot, bicycle, horseback, or skis to a wide variety of destinations throughout the valley.” So begins the Ogden Valley Pathway Master Plan. The Master Plan was developed by Ogden Valley Pathways, and represents a community-wide effort to identify and design a plan for pathways throughout the Ogden Valley. The County approved the plan, and it was published in 2002. The Master Plan illustrates pathways throughout our parks, forests, mountains, and open spaces. It also covers pathway connections to residential areas, schools, libraries, recreation facilities, and commercial areas. With that vision of a network of pathways, Ogden Valley Pathways will begin this spring to build and maintain trails as outlined in the plan. Why Do We Need A Pathway Master Plan? Ogden Valley is experiencing its most rapid growth since the pioneers first settled here. This growth is changing the Valley, threatening the rural lifestyle it provides, and that we have enjoyed. Roads, where we could once safely ride a horse or bicycle, have become unsafe. Development threatens to cut off access to open spaces. While the car will remain the primary way to get around, many residents want to be able to walk or bike to the post office or store. Many of us that live here want to take our horses on a trail without having to drive many miles, or to continue to hike, mountain bike, or cross-country ski within minutes of where we live. Parents want their kids to walk in safety to the bus stop or school. The Benefits of Pathways A network of pathways in Ogden Valley will allow local citizens, including our children; and visitors to travel safely by foot, horseback, bike, or skis throughout the entire Valley. The pathways in the Master Plan will also help protect a way of life that Valley residents have traditionally enjoyed by ensuring that access to water, wilderness, historic trails, and open space will be preserved. These pathways will also help connect communities of the Valley in a way that roads and highways cannot. Pathways can also provide significant health benefits to the community. Health problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity are all linked to lack of exercise. Walking, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country ski- All Snowblowers an additional 10% OFF with coupon ing, and similar activities are excellent forms of exercise that nearly everyone can do. Yet many people do not participate in them because they have no safe and convenient place to go. Non-motorized pathways provide that place. It has also been shown that pathways reduce crime and increase property values. Experience nationwide and here in Weber County shows that well planned trails attract families, local residents, and other friendly, responsible people, whose presence on the trails drive troublemakers away. Access to pathways is one of the most desirable amenities that homebuyers seek, and the value of most properties is enhanced by being near a trail. Work Planned To Begin Beginning this spring, Valley residents will see the vision in the Master Plan begin to become a reality. Once the snow melts, volunteers will begin making improvements on the Eden Trail. As soon as we get our final funding and approvals, we will kick off work to extend the Pineview Loop Trail from the North Arm Trail Head. Ogden Valley Pathways will publish plans for new trail construction and for trail maintenance in upcoming issues of the OGDEN VALLEY NEWS. In most cases, we will be asking for help from the community. So watch in future articles about how you can have the opportunity to help out!
