Show Volume IX Issue III THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 9 November 15, 2003 A Veritable Eden— Historical Photo The serpent is at his old tricks again The following article was printed in the newspaper the “Ogden Express,” a predecessor of the Standard-Examiner, on July 23, 1894. The “Mr. Fuller” mentioned in the last paragraph is probably Edmund Burke Fuller of Eden. The article was submitted by Bette Fuller of North Ogden, who came across the article while doing genealogical research. Ever since that memorable occasion in the days of Adam and Eve and the garden of Eden the public have been regaled with stories of his snakeship, some of which actually sounded like the devil. The latest comes from the beautiful little village of Eden, “just this side of Paradise,” and of all stories this is the one. According to reports, received at this office, there was seen last Friday evening, about sundown, coming over the mountains from the north, a monster snake, 100 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter, not wriggling along in the ordinary path of the snake—but floating gently through the air at thirty-five or forty miles per hour. It came swooping down in the direction of Wilbur’s store, at the corner of Independence park, and when almost there came within twenty or thirty feet of the ground. Suddenly swerving to the left it disappeared up over the mountains in the direction of Middle Fork Canyon. The movement of the monster was like a snake in water and it seemed to acquire speed without any effort whatever. Its skin seemed to be formed of scales like an alligator. The above story is vouched for by a number of Eden’s reliable men who saw the grim specimen. It was seen by half the inhabitants and created great excitement. Mr. Fuller, one of the oldest inhabitants of Eden, says that a great many years ago, a similar dragon appeared in the south of France. Hill of Hooper, Utah with the following narrative. The enclosed photo is of my grandfather Hyrum Carver (on the right—other individual unknown) shortly after he shot a bear in the Valley. As the story was told to me, the location of the kill was by the stream across from his home, which was located on the corner of the Patio (Wolf Creek) Road, southeast from the Valley Market. My grandparents (grandmother Maude was a very gracious, kind woman) were some of the first residents and long time stalwarts of our beautiful Valley. For your information, my roots are as follows: Father —- E. Carl Hill was from Liberty. His family home was the Chuck Story residence just inside the Liberty line. Mother Beatrice Carver Hill was from Eden. Brother Ray Hill (deceased) wife of Jean-nephew Keith. MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL Big-Screen TV! Comfortable Stadium Seating!
