Valley Students Perform at Peery’s Egyptian Theater A number of children from Ogden Valley were recently selected to perform in the Missoula Children’s Theatre performance of Red Riding Hood held at Peery’s Egyptian Theatre on November 1. The cast auditioned for the show at the beginning of the week, and rehearsed for just a few short days. Ogden Valley students who were cast for the performance include Ross Bassett of Huntsville, a member of the Wolf Gang; Cara Bassett, one of the Three Little Pigs; Connor Padilla of Nordic Valley, the Little Loveable Wolf; ShaLynn Merriam of Huntsville, a raccoon; Rachel Merriam, Red Riding Hood; Blake Merriam, the Boy Who Cries Wolf. The Missoula Children’s Theatre International Tour Project (MCT) is the largest touring children’s theatre program in the United States. The concept is based on a weeklong residency during which a team of two staff—Tour Actor and Directors— develop and produce a full-scale musical, with 50-60 local children as cast members. in all 50 states, Canada, Europe, South America, and Asia. Within each MCT cast, girls and boys are equal, the disabled become able, the shy experiment with bravery, the slow are rehearsed to perfection, the gifted become part of the whole. Children learn that all members of the cast are necessary for the show to go on. Few arenas exist where responsibility is taught and learned so clearly. It is an opportunity to excel, with all participants on the same level. It is a lesson from art that carries over into everyday life. On an almost daily basis, MCT receives letters from teachers and parents extolling the benefits received by their students and children through participation in the MCT programs: a stronger performance in their school work, a blossoming imagination, greater rapport with teachers and classmates, appreciation and empathy for people different from themselves, increased harmony with family members, and—most important—a happier child.
