Roosevelt declared that the government must wage war on the Great Depression. As part of this war, he proposed and Congress authorized the Works Progress Administration (WPA) 1n 1935. The purpose of the program was to put the jobless back to work on useful projects. Approximately $11 billion was spent on thousands of new public buildings, bridges, and roads. One such WPA project was the construction of the North Ogden Divide—also known as the Divide, the Pass, or the Moun- tain Road—names that have all been used interchangeably over the past sixty years. Many of the unemployed i1n Weber County, affected by the hard years of the depression, came to build this narrow, wind- ing road under Roosevelt’s plan to relieve the suffering and put money back into the hands of the unemployed citizen in order to “Jjump start” the economy. Going to work to build a new access road into Ogden Valley, men with picks and shovels came, dynamite was used, and up to thirty to fifty teams of horses strained under the weight of heavy loads. The men came and cut, blasted, and scraped a rib- bon shaped scar out of the steep mountain shedding face, the new road i1ts millennial debris down below into the belly of the canyon. Workers with a team of horses were paid $3.00 an hour. Some brought their teams from as far away as Hooper, others from their home community in North Ogden. Many county were families suffering in from the the depression. My grandfather, who was hired one summer because of his strong team of horses, noticed that when the working men stopped to take their lunch break one gentleman, who was particularly hard hit by the effects of this national disaster, always walked a distance away from the others to partake of his meal. Curious, grandfa- ther walked over to the worker one day during lunch, and noticed that the only thing the gentleman had to eat was a small pail of washed potato skins. Thereafter, grandmother always packed two lunches for grandfather. Constructed after the mid‘30s, the road took several years tocomplete.
