By Janet Hoffmann family This week my husband and I attended a parenting class at Snowcrest Jr. “Parenting Logic.” with High entitled, Love and In the class, three types members, etc. Relation- ships are our greatest resource. After the parenting meeting I resolved to be a better parent but came home and did i1t wrong again, but at least I knew i1t was wrong. The Drill Sergeant 1s the one who tells the child what s/he should or shouldn’t do. The consultant parent consults the child and expresses feelings, but also lets the child express feelings and make their own choices when appropriate. The first two are what you shouldn’t be. I am guilty of both. The consulting parent 1s the one you are supposed to be. [’m this type only on rare occasions. What does that tell you about my parenting skills? But don’t laugh too hard because I know many of you are in the same boat. No one ever told us how to parent so we are all flying by the seat of our pants children love it. and our Take every opportunity to learn all you can about parenting and just being a good family member. Wouldn’t it be great if children were required to take a class called, “How to be a Great Chi1ld?” They would learn how to be obedient to their parents, how to be responsible 1n every way, how to speak kindly to all I on being see a better par- helicopter children—even the parents adult chil- dren. Some parents still support them financially. I believe that when your child 1s 18 you can help him/her only if they are responsible. Sounds weird? If they are responsible they won’t let you help that much anyway and they certainly won’t be taking advantage of you. On the other hand, sible, they if they aren’trespon- will take advantage of the situation. All in all, you are better off to just stay out of their business. If they run into a problem they will soon learn they are the ones who have to solve it-a great lesson for all of us to learn as soon as possible. Then any help you do give them becomes a gift, not an expectation. Stay tough and let your children learn how to be respon- sible instead of helping them to become 1irresponsible. Good Luck.
