Show Volume XXV Issue IX The Ogden Valley news Page 5 June 1, 2019 Mark Your Calendar for the Opening of Ogden Valley Open Market—July 11! As the sun is working hard to melt away the snowcaps on the mountains, we see that spring has been underway in the valley for a while. Summer is almost here, which means Ogden Valley Open Market is ramping up for the 2019 season, which runs July 11 thru September 12, and the volunteers who make the Open Market happen are very busy! There are many things that make a community great; however, there can be no great community without volunteerism. The amazing women on the Open Market committee freely give of their time and work so that the Ogden Valley community can benefit from all that an open-air market brings: food, live music, art, fresh produce, business experience for young entrepreneurs and a “chillaxing” evening, among other things—all delivered to your doorstep. So nothing means more to the “Open Market Ladies,” than you coming out and showing your support! You can enjoy this local, valley event this summer on Thursday nights from 5:30 p.m. to dusk in the parking lot by Mad Moose Cafe! New this summer—produce vendors of any type can sell their produce for either 10% of that evening’s profit or $10; whichever one they choose. As the valley’s gardens begin producing more than can be eaten at home, bring the excess and sell it to your valley neighbors! If you’d like to introduce someone to fishing—or you’d like to give fishing a try, but don’t have a fishing license—Free Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity. Free Fishing Day will be held Saturday, June 8, and allows anyone to fish at any public waterbody in Utah without a license. It makes for a great family activity and is the perfect time to introduce your kids to fishing and get them outdoors. It’s a great day not only for beginning anglers to give fishing a try, but is also a fun time for experienced anglers too. “Because you don’t need a license to fish that day, it’s the perfect time to take someone fishing with you and introduce them to the sport,” Randy Oplinger, sport fisheries coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, said. “And, early June is one of the best times to fish in Utah. All of the fish in the state, both warmwater and coldwater fish, are active and willing to bite this time of the year.” If you don’t have any fishing equipment or you would like some fishing tips, you can check out of one of the DWR fishing events that will be held at waterbodies around Utah that day. “At most of the events, equipment will be available for people to use,” Oplinger said. “Volunteers will also be on hand to help you and your kids fish. Also, many of these waters will be stocked with fish before the event so there should be plenty of fish to catch.” Here are a couple of events DWR is hosting or helping with on June 8 in Northern Utah: Smith Park Pond in Farr West, Weber County - This event will be held at the Smith Park Pond at 2500 W. 4000 North St., 8:00 a.m. to noon, and is being hosted by DWR and Smith and Edwards.
