Show Page 6 The Ogden Valley news Volume XXIII Issue X June 15, 2016 Announcements Happy 80th Birthday Mary Jo Giles LaTulippe Mary Jo Giles LaTulippe of Ogden celebrated her 80 birthday. She was born in Provo, Utah on May 16, 1936 to Leonard Nuttall Giles and Amy Cummings Giles. She moved to Ogden Canyon when she was five years old. She graduated from Weber High School, Weber State College, Utah State, and later from BYU with a Master’s Degree in counseling. Mary Jo married Doug Peterson in 1958 and lived in Gunnison, Utah for six years. They divorced. She married George LaTulippe in 1975, and inherited two step-children, Mark and Patricia. Her professional career started at Bonneville High School as a counselor, then Brighton High School in Salt Lake. She then Mary Jo Giles LaTulippe was a counselor in the Weber State Counseling Center. Mary Jo, later, with two other women, opened the Women’s Center at Weber State; she ran a Divorce Support Group for 19 years that at one time included over 100 people with groups for children. Later there were two groups, one in Davis County as well as Weber State. While at Weber State she was presented with the first Professional Staff Award given by President Brady. The next year she was awarded the Crystal Crest Friend of Student. She loved skiing and river running. She was a Pre Dam, meaning she ran the upper Colorado River before the Glen Canyon Dam was built. She later ran Cataract Canyon and the lower Colorado to Lake Mead. She was a hostess for Elderhostels (Road Scholars) in the four corners area for Canyonlands Field Institute of Moab. She ran many rivers with all women crews. Mary Jo and George traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, parts of Central and South America, Europe, Russia, North Africa, the Canary Islands, New Zealand and Australia. She has three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren who she loves very much. Obituaries Laura Astrid Gillespie (Wall) November 3, 1929 ~ May 30, 2016 Laura Astrid Wall Gillespie, 86, passed away May 30, 2016 of natural causes. She was born in Murray, Utah, the fourth daughter of Erick Wilhelm Laura Gillespie and Mimmie Sofia Sedell Wall, on November 3, 1929. She was reared in Murray and graduated from Murray High School in 1948. On May 28, 1950, she married Gilbert LeRoy Gillespie in Elko, Nevada. After living in Salt Lake City, UT; Paris, ID; Logan, UT; and Clearfield, UT, they settled in Huntsville, UT. They were later divorced. In 1977, Laura moved to Riverdale, UT. She worked for Ogden City Corp. retiring in 1991 after 25 years of dedicated service. She was active in the LDS Church, serv- Obituaries Joseph S. Marchione August 21, 1953 ~ May 31, 2016 Joseph S. Marchione passed away Joseph Marchione May 31, 2016 in his home in Liberty, Utah. He was born August 21, 1953 in Norfork, Virginia to Joseph Marchione and Dorothy O’Donnell. Joe grew up in Virginia Beach. In 1971 he won the Junior Men’s Division of the East Coast Surfing Championship. He competed and won many awards in his life. His love of surfing sent him to live in Cocoa Beach, Florida; the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and to the North Shore of Oahu. In 1980 his interests turned to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. He lived in Breckenridge, Colorado and worked as a ski patroller. Joe was a passionate athlete, naturalist, friend, and protector of animals. Joe worked as a ski patrolman for Snowbasin ski area for five years and was a rancher in Liberty, Utah. Joe is survived by his wife Diana; stepdaughters Jennifer (Vaun) Archibald and Lana Michele Young; father, Joseph; brothers Tony, Sal, Dean, and Ryan; and sisters Sandra, Gina, and Maria. Joe had many friends that he kept in contact with all over the world. He is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy, and brother, Frank. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2016 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at 2765 E. 5100 N., Liberty, Utah. Ben Fowler Ben Earl Fowler January 24, 1920 ~ May 25, 2016 Our dear father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather, Ben Earl Fowler, passed away peacefully in his home Wednesday, May 25, 2016, surrounded by his family. Ben was born January 24, 1920 in Hooper, Utah. He was the eighth of George Edward and Effie Parker Fowler’s nine children. Ben had a happy childhood living on the family farm in Hooper, swimming in the canal, racing his horse and playing ball. He had many chores and found jobs working for neighbors, learning the value of hard work. He went to Hooper schools and graduated from Weber High School. He attended Weber State College for two years. In 1941, while attending Utah State University, he was recruited by the U.S. Navy. He served heroically during World War II as a decorated dive bomber and fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater. He served ten years reaching the rank of Lt. Commander. After the war he trained pilots in Pensacola, Florida. Ben married the love of his life, his soulmate and eternal companion, Rita Jefferis, on May 18, 1943 while on leave in Philadelphia, PA. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple July 22, 1950. With Rita as his partner, he was a successful entrepreneur and local business man. They built two laundromats in San Leandro and Hayward, CA. Their next venture was a homestead in Pinedale, WY. Here they changed 320 acres of sagebrush into green fields of grain and alfalfa. Later in Roy, Utah, they built the Burger Bar, which has been serving faithful customers for 60 years. The Burger Bar, famous for the “Big Ben,” has been recognized statewide in newspapers and publications and, nationally, was spotlighted on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” Ben served as the chairman of the Weber County Republican party and as a representative in the Utah State Legislature for two terms. Ben was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He desired to follow the Savior and willingly served in many callings including as the first Branch ing in many capacities, and as an Ordinance Worker in the Ogden Temple from 1994 to 1998. She was an excellent cook and loved to feed everyone who came through her door. She became renowned for her original recipes, for fried chicken, homemade rolls, potato salad, rhubarb pie and original cooking from her ancestors in Sweden. She is survived by her children: Michael Roy Gillespie (Linda), Diane G. Moss (Stanley), and Laurie G. Johnson (Brent); ten grandchildren, who were her pride and joy—Brian, Eric, Mark, Lisa, and Craig Moss; Asa and Alex Gillespie; Michael L. Salerno; and Cory and Jillian Johnson; and 13 great-grandchildren and counting! Graveside services were held Saturday, June 4, 2016 at the Huntsville City Cemetery, 6000 E. 100 S., Huntsville. The family extends a special thank you to Hospice Care of Utah, Brandi, Brooke, Lilly, and Tammy; and Family Tree Assisted Living, Miranda, MariLee, Cindy and Alexa; and all others who took such good care of mom. Together Ben and Rita served missions in San Francisco (California San Jose Mission) and in Minominee, Michigan (Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission). At home they served local missions to LDS Employment Services, the Family History Department in Salt Lake City, and two stake missions. Ben was strong in his testimony of Jesus Christ. He was a noble man of integrity, honesty, and generosity. He worked hard in all of his endeavors. His children and grandchildren will never forget his admonitions of “work hard and save your money.” He and Rita were true partners in all of their business ventures, church callings, and especially the family. Ben and Rita were devoted to and loved their eight children. They were always generous to those who were in need, helping countless youth in many ways, and had a special love for Joni Layne Gibbons and Vahed Shekarforoosh. Their 50 grandchildren were the focus of their lives in later years. Ben took care of Rita for more than ten years during her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He has missed her greatly for the last six years and now they are together again. Ben was preceded in death by his dear wife, Rita; his parents; and all of his siblings. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Beth Fowler and Bettie Jones. He is also survived by his eight children, Toni Smedley (Lynn), Mickie Johnson (Warren), Bob Fowler (Rhonda), Ginger Peterson (Mark), Debi Haws (Greg), Dave Fowler (Connie), Jyl Marsden (McKay), and Jeff Fowler (Therese); 50 grandchildren; and 136 great-grandchildren, with six more on the way. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 2, 2016 at the Riverdale Stake Center, 4000 S. Parker Dr. (1150 W.), Riverdale. Interment, Hooper Cemetery. Ben requested donations be made to the LDS Church Missionary fund in lieu of flowers.
