Show Volume XIX Issue VI The Ogden Valley news Page 5 June 15, 2011 Landscape Designer Laurie Van Zandt Highlighted in National Magazine Huntsville-based landscape designer Laurie Van Zandt— owner of The Ardent Gardener Landscape Design—was recently selected as one of twelve Experts in the 2011 edition of Laurie Van Zandt Backyard Solutions magazine. Backyard Solutions, published by New York based Harris Publications, Inc., is a nationally distributed annual publication available at local home improvement centers. Laurie was interviewed by the publisher for various articles contained in the magazine, and photographs of two of her gardens were selected for inclusion. A photograph of a South Weber garden was featured in the article “Trends 2011” describing a trend towards more intricate detailing in the garden; and a Sandy garden was highlighted in “Find Your Shade Grade.” This garden features layers of granite stone, mature Japanese maples, white iris, and ivory halo dogwood in a woodland setting. Last year, in the 2010 Edition of Backyard Solutions, an Eden garden designed by Ms. Van Zandt was featured in a two-page spread under the heading “Drought Tolerant.” This garden was selected for its eco-friendly design and its ability to successfully transition from a newly built environment to the surrounding native landscape. Also in 2010, Laurie had two gardens featured in Great Backyards, another annually produced, nationally distributed publication. Each of the two gardens was given four pages in the magazine. A seven-acre Huntsville garden titled “Made to Look Natural” was highlighted in the Waterfeature section. The water feature originates in an acid stained concrete trough fashioned to look like a livestock watering trough, transitions to a cobble-lined stream, and terminates in a pond designed to allow for play. The other garden featured is the designer’s own. “Potpourri of Garden Spaces” was one of four gardens highlighted under the Garden Rooms section. Laurie designed the garden the first winter she lived in Huntsville, and over the last ten years has transformed her one acre site into a series of unique, connected garden spaces filled with cold-hardy perennials, grasses, trees, and shrubs. Her garden has been toured by The Master Gardeners program at Utah State Extension, and was a featured garden on the 2009 Ogden N a t u r e C e n t e r Garden Tour fundraiser. V a n Zandt has been a professional landscape designer for the past 15 years—ten Landscape designed by Laurie in Utah. She Van Zandt of Huntsville. moved to Utah in 2001 from Southern California. Laurie attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s School or Architecture, and completed many Landscape classes at Orange Coast College. She has served on the Education Committee for the Utah Nursery and Landscape Association for the past seven years, and is a strong believer in continuing education, attending many conferences and seminars related to her industry. She is an associate member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Even if you don’t, who can resist a spooky story? Or two… or more… and local writers are ready to deliver. Seven years ago, Drienie Hattingh began a writing critique group, The Eden Writers Circle. Throughout the years, writers met together to discuss and critique each other’s work. In 2007 The Eden Writer’s Circle geared up to present a writing conference. In anticipation for their October themed conference, Hattingh challenged members of the writing group to go outside of their traditional writing genre and write a scary story. The evening of the conference, participants gathered around the fire at Red Moose Lodge as Eden Writers shared their spooky stories. Since 2007, Hattingh has worked with Lynda Scott and Sandee Drake compiling and editing all the stories into one collection. Beginning June 15, their book Tales from Huntsville, Eden, Liberty and Beyond… will be available for purchase. In 2010, the book won honorable mention in the League of Utah Writer’s Adult Manuscript Competition. The book also includes a story written by bestselling author Wendy Toliver, and a big thumbs-up from real life ghost hunter Patrick Burns. Many of the stories in the book feature local lore and locations. “I want everyone in the Valley to be as scared of Mountain Maggie as I was when I was eight,” says Ryan Russell. His story is based on a story his father told him when he was a child. “I was driving over Trapper’s Loop after an Eden Writers meeting,” states Dimitira Van Leeuwen. “It was late, in the dead of winter, not another car in sight when my story ‘Jelly’ formed in my mind.” Tanner Clark based his story “The Saloon” on a local tale, and Drienie Hattingh’s hitch-hiking, bride-themed story also has Valley roots. Other writers tap into locations beyond our valley. Angela Bulloch, an English teacher at Snowcrest, used Angels Landing in Zion’s National Park as the setting for her story, where a couple’s anniversary trip takes a chilling twist. Brenda Hattingh started writing “Crystal Fever” in her head while mining for crystals at Devil’s Playground in Southern Utah. “I was horrified,” she admits, “lying head first in a hole, mining crystals, thinking of ‘Crystal Fever.’” Tales from Huntsville, Eden, Liberty and Beyond… features thirteen stories from local authors and is being published through DMT Publishing. The book may be purchased after June 15 at many local businesses, including Dottie Becks, Valley Market, Mad Moose, Alpine Pizza, Hastings, and Wisebird Bookery. A book signing event is scheduled for August 6 at Hastings book store in North Ogden from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and on October 22, also from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. This book of “spooky” tales includes contributions from the authors Drienie Hattingh, Lynda Scott, Sandee Drake, Wendy Toliver, Tanner Clark, Ryan Russell, Kera Erickson, Dimitria Van Leeuwen, Angela Bulloch, and Brenda Hattingh. Eden Youth Wins 5th Golden Ticket to Tour K-2 Ski Factory It was a chance of a lifetime for Jake Lewis, the 14-year-old from Eden, when on May 17 he was flown to Seattle for a grand tour of the K-2 ski factory, and given a chance to take part in a “Free Skis for Life” competition. He was one of five golden ticket winners granted by K-2 Skis and Freeskier Magazine in a fun event that mimicked the infamous Charlie & the Chocolate Factory competition and tour. The four other competitors found their golden tickets when they purchased K-2 skis from around the world, but Jake entered an online contest through “Freeskier” Magazine, and was selected at random out of 112,000 entries. The main contest was held all day Wednesday, May 18 as famed K2 freeskier Seth Morrison led the golden ticket holders on a tour of the South Seattle complex. The group got to see the workings of the 100,000plus, square-foot warehouse, offices, labs, and showroom and the eccentric team that works there. Throughout the day, the winners were greeted by various “characters.” Employees donned hilarious personas such as a drill sergeant, Captain K2, Sasquatch, and a mob boss to explain the workings of the facility. In the warehouse, all of the employees wore matching K2 sweaters and as they zoomed around in their forklifts, there certainly was a feeling of “oompa loompas” hard at work. Jake was given very little information about the competition they would be “enduring” throughout the tour, but knew it would be creative and funny based on the previous year’s event. He was instructed to bring his ski boots and food for Sasquatch, and was given a list of tasks and photos to complete at the airport on his trip to K-2. These were the first challenges. His mother Melissa Lewis accompanied him and helped him get his photos. Even before leaving Eden, Jake purchased an 8-lb bone from the Valley Market as his offering to Sasquatch. In a typical act of smalltown kindness, the ladies in the deli made a custom barcode sticker that read “Sasquatch Treat” to help Jake win the “Feed Sasquatch” element of the contest. The competitors were challenged by such important tasks as a “Meat-Hucking” contest, a Jello-Sucking contest, a basketball shoot-out in their boots, an obstacle course in the warehouse, a ski-breaking contest, a coke-chugging contest, and other equally odd games. The highlight for Jake was designing and making his own pair of skis and, of course, meeting the many athletes who were accompanying them. Along with Seth Morrison, other athletes hung out with the group, including Sean Petit, Pep Fujas and Michelle Parker.
