Editor’s Note: These articles appeared in the “Salt Lake Tribune” on November 24 and November 25, 1964, respectively, and describe the transport and set up of the annual Salt Lake Tribune’s Community Christmas Tree. In 1964 the tree was brought from the yard of Joseph and Mary Peterson’s of Huntsville. The Peterson’s home was located on the east side of the Huntsville Park. These articles and photos of the Tribune’s Community Christmas Tree are being used by permission of the “Salt Lake Tribune.” HUNTSVILLE, Weber County—A power saw buzzed through the giant trunk of a blue spruce here Monday morning and The Salt Lake Tribune’s 1964 Community Christmas Tree was born. The 65-foot tree was cut and hauled by the Salt Lake Transfer Co. to the outskirts of Salt Lake City where it will rest until Tuesday at 8 a.m. when it will be hauled downtown. The beautiful tree will be mounted in front of the Tribune Building, 143 S. Main, Tuesday morning. Crews form the Mellus Tree Co. will replace any broken branches and then Young Electric Sign Co. will place the giant star and some 800 lights on it. 200 Decorations The Kimball Sign Co. will take over and place some 200 gaily-colored decorations on the tree. The big moment will come Friday night when the tree will be lighted, along with other decorations in downtown Salt Lake City. This—along with Santa Claus, of course—will be the highlight of the annual Christmas parade Friday evening. Throwing the main switch to light The Tribune’s tree will be 11-year-old V. Scott Fotheringham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vaun Fotheringham, 4666 Sycamore Dr. Name Selected Scott was selected to turn the tree lights on last April during The Tribune’s observance of Arbor Day. His name was drawn as winner of a blue spruce seedling and to turn on the tree lights during ceremonies at the Tribune’s Christmas Tree grove at the Mountain Dell Golf Course. The grove is expected to yield its first tree for the community around the year 2000. Watching the cutting and hauling operations here Monday morning with mixed emotions was Mrs. Mary Peterson, donor of the tree. The tree was planted as a four-foot sapling in front of the Peterson home in 1910 by her husband. “I’ll miss it a little, I guess,” the 81-year-old Mrs. Peterson smiled. “But I’ll get more light Joseph and Mary Peterson on their 50th wedding anniversary. His name was drawn for the honor during The Tribune’s Arbor Day observance last April.
