They were treated Students to Read! to lunch and games in the conference room and given a certificate. We want to congratulate our students and the hard work they do! By Hannah Warburton In our school we have been doing a program called Ken Garf Road to Success. It is a reading motivation program. We are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes each night. We can even win prizes. Some people said, “I wouldn’t read at all, unless there were prizes.” Other kids say, “I love to read! No matter if I win a prize or not, I would still read. Most of the time I read way more than 20 minutes each night anyway.” After we read each night, we write down the minutes we read on a yellow sheet. Then we bring that tally sheet to school at the end of the week. We give it to our teacher and she puts it in a box for Mrs. Burggink, the lady who is in charge of the program. The boxes are where the names are taken from for the prizes. Three or four times a month, Mrs Burggink draws out four names—one boy’s and one girl’s from the kindergarten-through-third-grade box, and one each from the fourth-through-sixthgrade grade box. Possible prizes are books, coupons, rulers, pencil, and a lot more. Some people ask, “Do I even have a chance of winning? Do I have to read? Can I read anything or does it have to be a book?” To win, you just have to read. You can read anything you want; comics, recipes, billboards, magazines, or a story to a little brother or sister. You just have to read! So let’s all try to read 20 minutes, or even more! Find a good book, and READ, READ, READ!!! Science Day at Valley Elementary By Michael Wendell, On Thursday, September 17, Valley Elementary sixth-grade students had an awesome science day. Parent volunteers who helped with the heat shield were Mrs. Story, Mr. Guthrie, and Mrs. Wendell. The rocket-project volunteers were Mrs. Spurlock and Mrs. Hogge; and Mrs. Warburton helped with the fireman study on infrared light. Many others contributed to this wonderful event as well. Hopefully, we might have something like this again in the school year, or maybe in future classes. Either way, this was a phenomenal event. Thanks to the parents who gave up time in their lives to come over and help us have a nice day full of fun.
