There was a whole lot of movin’, passin’, and shootin’ goin’ on at the Huntsville Park between June 1 and June 5 as 58 youth from Ogden Valley participated in a soccer camp with an international theme. The youth were coached by a team of four pro soccer athletes from Great Britain—three from England, Mark, Sam, and Steven; and one from Scotland, Jamie. The coaches are part of Valley School class of 1957-58, when they were in ninth grade. This class was the first ninth Challenger Sports British grade class in the Huntsville Valley Elementary School. When asked what he liked about being here in the United States, soccer coach Jamie Macgregor, who is from Glasgow, stated, “Seeing the scenery and meeting new people.” Commenting on the difference between youth soccer here and in Great Britain, Macgregor stated, “I think the youth from Great Britain play a bit tougher; I think they’re more focused, probably because American youth are usually interested in many different sports along with soccer. Also, in Great Britain, soccer has been around a lot longer.” Still, the youth who attended the camp seemed to have a good time, and learned a lot about shooting and throwing along with a variety of soccer moves. They even learned a few tricks here and there, according to Coach Mark Bartran, who is a striker for the pro team Handsworth Athletics back in Birmingham, England. The local camp was organized by AYSO region representative Kathy Nelson, Tournament and Camp Coordinator for Ogden Valley region 422. The coaches Correction ARE YOU A “NEWCOMER” TO OGDEN VALLEY?
