This event will not include all the wild flowers around the Valley, but a selection of plants that are used as herbs (medicinal/edible) too. An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties. The history of herbal remedies dates back to the dawn of man’s existence on earth. We know how wise in herbal lore the Indians and aboriginal tribes are; the Chinese claim that the knowledge of plant remedies originated with them and dates back several thousand years. History points more definitely to Egypt, and it is well known that the ancient Egyptians utilized many herbs medicinally, which today are numbered among our proven and most valuable remedies. Herbs were called “The medicine chest of the country people.” Herbal medicine products are dietary supplements that people take to improve their health. Many herbs have been used for a long time for claimed health benefits. They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried An opportunity to learn more about herb and wildflowers in our community is being made available through a guided learning walk called “Learn the Healing Medicinal Properties of the Basic Herbs that Grow in Your Own Back Yard.” Pre-registration for the tour is required. For more information, or to register, contact Vicki at 801-876-0055 or Kristin at 801745-0634. The cost is $45 per person. The walk is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bring a sack lunch and meet at the home of Steve and Kristin Johnson located at 7382 East, 100 South in Huntsville (directly north of the Ogden Valley Library). Come prepared for a day of outdoor enjoyment as we stroll looking at edible and medicinal plants. This event is fun for all ages. Come and get to know the plants growing around you. Bring a beverage, lunch, and whatever you normally would for a day hike. In addition, bring a pen, notepad, and plant identification books if desired. Learn to identify and use many edible and medicinal plants that grow wild in the Huntsville area.
