Show Volume XVI Issue XII The Ogden Valley news Page 13 June 15, 2009 Farmers and Artists Market a Success Snowcrest Students Excel in Sporting Events Presidential & National Fitness Award Winners from Snowcrest Jr. High The President’s council on Physical Fitness and Sports strives to make the health and fitness of all Americans a top national priority. The President’s Physical Fitness Program, which is part of the P.E. curriculum at Snowcrest, includes five events that measure muscular strength/endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, speed, agility, and flexibility. The tests that are used are curl-ups, shuttle run, pull-ups, v-sit reach, and the one-mile run. The National Fitness Award is given to those who score at or above the 50th percentile on all five events-but fall below the 85th percentile in one or more of the events. “Four-Sport” Award Winners Three 9th grade girls earned the “Four Sport” Award at Snowcrest this year. They are Kelsey Stevenson and Melissa Tidwell who both played Weber High soccer; and Snowcrest volleyball, basketball, and track. Chantil Martin played every sport that a girl can play at Snowcrest beginning with softball then volleyball, basketball, and track. Melissa Tidwell has been a four-sport athlete all three years while at Snowcrest. Congratulations to these three girls for their hard work and dedication. Outstanding Male& Female Athletes at Snowcrest Jr. High Dalin Froerer was awarded the Outstanding Male Athlete (2006-2009) at the Skyhawk assembly held Thursday, May 28. Dalin has been very involved in basketball, track, and cross-country during his three years at Snowcrest. He recently placed in the top three in both the 800 and 1600 meters at the Weber School District track meet. He also played on Snowcrest’s basketball team for three years and lettered in cross-country during the fall season. Dalin is the son of Bryce and Joan Froerer of Huntsville. Chantil Martin received the Outstanding Female Athlete award (2006-2009). Chantil has been an outstanding athlete for three years in softball, volleyball, basketball, and track. She was also a cheerleader for two years. She recently took 1st place in the girl’s discuss at the District Track Meet. Chantil is the daughter of Mike and Brenda Martin of Eden. Marsha Rasmussen announced and welcomed the participants that were performing in the opening ceremonies observing the Memorial Day weekend and the opening of the Second Annual Old Town Eden Farmers and Artists Market. Memorial Day weekend honors our service men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. In observance of this important holiday, a local scout troop opened the Farmers and Artists Market by presenting our country’s colors, and leading the audience in The Pledge of Allegiance. Soloist Zoe Noell sang a rendition of the National Anthem with patriotic fervor. Haynes Fuller then offered a sobering speech on our country’s past and present situation, and the importance that we have as U.S. citizens to support our service men and women; and, most importantly, to remember those who have given their lives for our freedoms. Following his remarks, Clare Fuller and Haynes were awarded the Farmers and Artists Market‘s first annual Local Farmer of the Year award. They were presented with shirts and hats carrying the Farmers Artists Market (FAM) logo. Linda Knudtson introduced the FAM committee and thanked them for their efforts. She then announced the “Some are Silly, Some are Not” children’s art contest winners. These winners were awarded the accumulative amount of the $1 entry fee, which was dispersed between the top artists. The categories were broken down into grade categories; first being, K - 2nd grade. Winners were 1st, Rosie Goodwin; 2nd, Seymore Paul; 3rd, Halle Southwick. Third - 5th grade winners were 1st, Dustin Deeter; 2nd, Claudia Schneider; 3rd, Anna Shepherd. Sixth - 9th grade winners were 1st, Matthew Shepherd; 2nd, Heather Shupe; 3rd, Ryan Belnap. The FAM committee stated that they would like to extend a thank you to the student artists for sharing their talents with the community. Their art was displayed on the wall of the High Altitude Fitness building during the FAM. All artists that entered should pick up their artwork and prize money at the Sandhill Farms booth located next to the OVBA booth in the front of the Farmers Market. Another art contest will be offered sometime during the following sum- mer months. Linda Knudtson addressed the crowd, and expressed her excitement on how the community festival is growing. She stated: “It is the product of many hardworking hands: hands that harvest the fruits of the earth; hands that cultivate creativity on canvas; hands that make guitar strings sing; hands that shape clay vessels at a potter’s wheel; hands that tend the flocks and herds; “All are entrepreneurial hands–reaping the bounties of an individual’s creative spirit, feeding our community’s collective soul. “On Memorial Day weekend, our hands salute our nation’s flag and our hometown heroes, and we reverence our forbearers. As this Market continues on throughout the summer, may our hands clasp in friendship as we gather on Saturday mornings and wave in neighborliness to each other throughout the week.” The Ogden Valley Business Association was front and center to welcome patrons as they entered the market. Over 500 shoppers were counted. The food collection container for the local food bank was also well supported, and will be ongoing throughout the summer. A lost-andfound and a TLC-bandaid center can be found at this location also. A “Kids Zone” is also offered at the FAM. Future entrepreneurs participated with many different handmade items for sale. Children were treated to storytelling, magic shows, and a bean-bag toss. From play dough to face painting and water play of sorts, children of all ages and sizes had a good time throughout the day. FAM is open every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through October 31. Come and support our vendors this season. Come and enjoy these and many more exciting activities and products at the Farmers and Artists Market. See you next week! Vender applications can be obtained at ovba. org/FAM, at the customer service desk at the Valley Market, and on the wall outside Harley and Bucks restaurant. To be clear, the board believes the OVP mission is best served by joining forces with Weber Pathways. The wheels are now in motion to fold the OVP mission back into Weber Pathways and dissolve in August, but final voting by the Board will not occur until then. Although time is running out, it is not too late to have supporters step forward and argue otherwise, but such an argument must include capable and passionate leaders with a feasible plan for going it alone, without the focus and support of lower valley voters. Volunteers Needed @ Huntsville’s July 4 celebration If anyone feels strongly enough about the cleanup effort Sunday, July 5 at 12:00 noon. continuation of OVP to take on leadership responsibilities, now is the time to present If many hands help out, work should be completed in 2 – 3 hours. yourself, your arguments, and your plan to the board. They are a great group of volunteers who have accomplished an amazing amount since 2006. They are doing their best to promote, construct, and maintain more trails in Ogden Valley. Editor’s note: Kimbal Wheatley has been a supporter and volunteer for Weber and Ogden Valley Pathways for more than a decade and has served as chair of Ogden Valley Pathways since December 2006. The OVP board remains attracted to the vision of putting our people and money directly into Ogden Valley trail projects and leaving the organizational work to Weber Pathways. We are confident we know how to work with Weber Pathways to broaden their focus into the valley. On the other hand, transferring the Ogden Valley Pathways mission back to Weber Pathways could have a cost. Ogden Valley trail projects will be part of something much larger, and it will be up to us valley residents to conceptualize and advance projects important to us. Valley projects will be higher on priority lists if we have the support of the rest of Weber County residents. We also run the risk of our group of valley trails enthusiasts dissipating (people who like to spend some of their time dreaming and scheming about new trails), but we intend to keep enthusiasm alive within the framework of Weber Pathways. Since January the board has extensively discussed the pros and cons of dissolving OVP and recombining with Weber Pathways, driven partially by not having a replacement pipeline. After hot debates and a fair amount of anguish, the OVP Board voted to seriously investigate joining forces with Weber Pathways, which also means dissolving OVP. This decision is largely driven by a belief that Ogden Valley trails will be better off in the long run if we return the mission and organization to Weber Pathways and put our energy & people into Presidential Fitness Award The Presidential Fitness Award recognizes youth who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. It goes to students who score at or above the 85th percentile on all five events. Twenty-four students at Snowcrest earned the National Fitness Award and five students earned the Presidential Fitness Award. Melissa Tidwell is the first student from Snowcrest to earn the Presidential Fitness Award for all three years at Snowcrest. The four other students earning the Presidential Award are 8th graders Ashley Bass and Taylor Robbins, and 7th graders Parker Wilson and Auston Tesch.
