Show The Ogden Valley news Page Volume XVI Issue XII June 15, 2009 New Barbecue Restaurant Opens at Huntsville Square Texas Pride Barbecue, a family-oriented eatery at historic Huntsville Square, opened its doors for business Thursday, June 11. Owners Greg Farley and Eric Simonsen grew up as childhood friends in Austin, Texas. According to Farley, the two business partners have dreamed of opening a Texas-style bar- Eric Simonsen and Greg Farley with the newly customized Texas Pride smoker--where all the restaurant’s meat will be cooked. becue restaurant in Utah ever since they left Texas to attend college here and were “unable to find a really good barbecue in the state.” The two entrepreneurs began their barbecue efforts by organizing annual “Texas Parties” for Texans attending college in Utah. Farley and Simonsen used a smoker to prepare Texas-style barbecue, organized street dancing, printed special t-shirts, and had Texas-made Blue Bell ice cream packed in dry ice specially delivered. “Our first Texas party drew 125 attendees, and each year more and more people came—by last year, more than 500 people joined the party,” said Simonsen. With the experience and success of the Texas parties, the two later spent five years running Texas Pride Catering. Now they are excited by the opportunity to have their own restaurant and to introduce authentic Texas barbecue to the residents and visitors of Ogden Valley. Hours of operation for Texas Pride will be 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; and 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will be closed on Sundays and Mondays. In addition to restaurant operations, Texas Pride will provide take-out and catering ser- vices in the greater Ogden area. “The Ogden Valley is beautiful and Huntsville Square is a great meeting place for family reunions and other groups. With a little advance notice, we can provide great food at a reasonable price for groups of any size,” said Farley. To make arrangements for take-out or for catering for groups, call 801-745-2745. EDEN Community Acupuncture—An affordable alternative Community Acupuncture is a revolutionary business model whose goal is to make acupuncture more affordable and accessible. In the community acupuncture setting, clients are treated in a room while seated in a recliner at the same time as two or three other clients. Needles are placed in distal points (below the knee and elbow, on the scalp, as well as on the ear) so that patients can remain fully clothed during treatment. Many conditions, including low back pain, can be treated with distal acupuncture points. By sharing the space and the acupuncturist time and attention, clients also essentially share the cost. By making acupuncture treatments affordable, in this case, $20 a session, it is hoped that patients can make more frequent visits and their condition will respond more favorably and quickly. In the Community Acupuncture setting, a very brief history is obtained, as well as a pulse evaluation. Clients choose a chair and then needles are placed. It is recommended that you wear loose clothing that can be easily and comfortable pushed above your knees and elbows. Shoes and socks are removed, as points are often selected in hands and feet. The environment is respectfully quiet. Many believe that the community setting itself has a healing quality that generates a certain collective energy in the room. Clients usually are ready to have their needles out in 45 minutes to an hour, but can stay as long as they’d like, unless after one hour someone else is waiting for a treatment. During an individualized acupuncture session (not Community acupuncture), a more thorough history and evaluation is obtained, and additional therapies can be utilized, i.e. cupping, acutonics etc. If you feel you’d like to be evaluated and treated initially with an individual session like this, then follow up in the Community Acupuncture setting, that is perfectly acceptable. In fact, it could help individualize and fine tune point selection to better treat your condition. Community Acupuncture treatment is still geared to treat you condition. It is $20 per session. In addition, during the Community Acupuncture hours, I also offer an “intro to acupuncture” session where a general treatment of four to six needles are placed for either a nourishing of qi/energy treatment, or a calming/relaxing treatment. This is your chance to try it out, especially if you’re worried about how the needles will feel. Shan Yao Mountain Medicine will be offering Community Acupuncture during the hours of the Farmers Market, Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. At this point in time, no appointments are necessary, and walk-ins are encouraged. In the future as demand increases, clients will sign up for a specific time the week before, or call to make an appointment/reservation. If for some reason I’m not out front marshalling people in to try acupuncture, please just walk back through the High Altitude Fitness cardio room, start your paperwork, and select your chair! Hope to see you enjoying the Farmers and Artists Market, and adding acupuncture to aid in your health and wellness! Note: Shan Yao Mountain Medicine is an Acupuncture and Chinese Herb Clinic. Owner Beth Kristenson is a licensed acupuncturist. Regular clinic hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. by appointment at 801-783-2094. High Altitude Fitness Brings High Adventure to the Valley High Altitude Fitness (HAF) is excited to introduce another way to get active this summer—with High Altitude Adventures! Over the last few weeks, HAF has facilitated two new High Adventure Camps including, “Picture This” Nature Photography and “We Rock” Rock Climbing camps as part of there summer camp schedule. “The Valley and surrounding areas are amazing places to get out, explore, and try something new. We thought these camps would give kids, teens, and adults in the community a way to get some adventure in their summer and learn some new skills,” says Caralee Burton, owner and Summer Camp Director. Caralee, who earned her degree from the University of Utah in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, has been looking forward to introducing these camps since they opened their doors in 2006. “We could not be happier with the response. We had more interest than slots available. We are really looking forward to adding more High Adventure to our summer line up—both this summer and in the future.” HAF kicked off their summer with their Picture This, Nature Photography Camp. The camp was taught by Natalie Clark, experienced Nature Photography instructor for the University of Utah. “The kids who don’t have a chance to explore up here don’t know what they are missing,” stated Natalie, who has spent time traveling all over the world. “The scenery up here is some of the best you could ask for.” The camp includes instruction in technique, hiking through North Fork Park, a photography scavenger hunt, and a day topped off with a campfire and roasted marshmallows. When five-year-old Barrett Roberts came home from the camp he told his mom what they did with enthusiasm, “We took pictures of flowers and trees and bugs. We hiked to a waterfall, and we even roasted marshmallows and hotdogs. It was just like camping!” “We Rock” Rock Climbing Camp, took 15 participants ages 7 to 13 all over Ogden’s premier rock climbing walls. The camp even included a day at some of Logan’s famous climbing spots as well as a day at I Rock indoor climbing gym. The camp was taught by Brian Nye who has been climbing for ten years, both competitively and recreationally. His AMGA certification and experience working with kids made him the perfect guide for a fun and safe climbing experience. “With the right equipment and the proper techniques, climbing is a very safe sport,” Brian explains. “Starting off the week doing indoor climbing gives participants a chance to get a feel for climbing in an environment that feels comfortable. It also gives me a chance to teach safe belay and climbing techniques without any distractions.” Kim Best, mother of four of the camp’s participants, said, “Rock HIGH ALTITUDE cont. on page 12 www.huntsvillesquare.com STORE HOURS: MON. - SAT. 7 AM - 10 PM SUNDAY 7 AM - 9 PM Congratulations to Sandra Jones and Carol Barnes, the two winners of our $100 worth of meat drawing.
