The program is being held in conjunction with the completion ofa monument honoring early pioneers who settled the mountain community of Eden. The monument will also provide a home for the old Eden School House bell that was removed from the Eden school before it was destroyed around 1947. The old Eden School House bell. From the “History of the Eden Ward,” we read, “It has been told that when the saints were ordered to move close together on the new town site for mutual protection to each other against Indians and other early hazards, the women and children were left to their homes in town while the men folk worked the farms outside of town. When danger or an emergency presented itself, the women ran to the school house and rang the bell. This was an srt to their husbands to hurry back to town to protect their homes and families.” The bell that will be placed atop the mon- ment was a part of the third and last yellow brick schoolhouse. This bell was also used in the community during emergencies and to call the children to school and to come in from recess. Young kids also had fun trying to think of ways to get away with ringing it. The Eden school was built in 1910. It had two stories and five large rooms. If students passed their 8th grade examinations, they could proceed to Weber Academy located in Ogden near the main branch Weber County Library. The Eden School House was remodeled in 1919 when new rooms were added, including and entrance hall, restrooms, and an enlarged basement. At that time the 9th and 10th grades were added In 1926 the district began bussing the 10th grade students to Weber High located at Washington Blvd. and 12th Street where Stop and Shop currently stands. From 1929 to 1945 they began bussing students to Huntsville, except for the Ist through 3rd graders. The last teacher to teach at the school was Zollie Mae Graham. In 1946, all kids went to Huntsville for their schooling and the Eden School was closed and finally torn down. The bell was removed and has been preserved during all these years. The monument dedication ceremony will be held at 11:00 am. The community is invited to attend. Jay Bachman of Eden will be the guest speaker. Madelyn Evans and Rosemary Waite of Eden, who spearheaded the project, along with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Eden Camp, would eapesially like to recognize and thank those who donated their time and resources making the construction of the monument possible. These donors include eterson Builders, Gary Buxton Construction, and Marty Porter. Thanks also go to Ben Toone for caring for the bell during the last several years. r more information, contact Madelyn Evans at 745-3415. 20 YEARS TRAVEL EXPERIENCE Patricia A.
