Show wm" “DHE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 3 July 15, 2005 UDOT Region One Road Report Letters to the Editor Liberty Park Seeks Residents Help We wish to thank all the people who volunteered during this year’s Liberty ays. It was a huge success. Liberty Park is completely run by volunteers. We start working on the 4th of July in January. A small group of people volunteer hundreds of hours to run the park and put on the 4th of July festivities for our community. What people don’t realize, is that most of the money earned goes directly to the fireworks. Last year for example, we only made $1,500.00 for park operations from the Liberty Days celebration. A yearly $10.00 fee from Liberty residents funds the park only. This fee has not changed since the park was founded in the early eighties, and $10.00 in 1982 went a lot farther than it does today. We work closely with the state auditor’s office who has informed us that we are the lowest funded special district park in the state. The park desperately needs money to update the facilities. The arena is hardly used anymore because the sand is so old and compacted. The sprinkler system in the arena seems to spring a new leak every time we turn it on. The playground is tiny, dilapidated and needs to be rebuilt. The bottom line is Liberty Park needs some help!!! We have had several meetings with County Commissioner Camille Cain trying to find some additional funding for the park. The result is there isn’t any available. Money to improve the park has to come from the residents of Liberty. In the past, we have added new bleachers, renovated the bathrooms, restored the announcer’s booth, and added new signage. These improvements were made almost entirely by donations to the park as well as through local Eagle Scout projects. We will try to have some sort of fundraiser, but the park committee is exhausted from putting on the 4th right now (please remember, our park is completely operated by busy people who volunteer to run the park on the side). We previously ran an article in the Ogden Valley News asking for donations for our playground, and got only one donation from a family that lives in Salt Lake. If we could fix the arena and the playground, more residents could enjoy the use of our park. Please step up and help us make this an attractive and fun park for YOU. We really need additional funding in order to continue to offer the services that valley residents expect. If you are willing to assist in organizing a fundraiser for our community park or contribute in any way ease call us at 745-1176. Because of their efforts, they were able to raise $34,000 to be divided equally between the two charities. Proving the naysayers wrong who said the ride couldn’t be accomplished in such a short time span, the two defied the elements and physical limitations and met their time schedule, completing the ride in 37 days, a week ahead of schedule. When asked if the ride was more difficult physically or mentally, Trickler replied, “By far—mentally, especially when I began missing my family, or when the weather turned bad. Fortunately when one of us would hit a low, the other was there to keep you motivated and focused.” When Trickler was asked what the high moment of the trip was, he replied that it was when he could smell the Atlantic Ocean near the end of the ride into Williamsburg, Virginia. “At that moment I knew we had accomplished our goal. I literally started to cry.” Bob and Suzie Holliday of Eden were there to greet the two at their final destination. Both Trickler and Lewis agreed, achieving this goal, we learned that ame can accomplish anything you set your mind to if you continue working towards it one day at a time, and determine never to give up.” Lewis is married to Melissa and live in Eden. Together they have four children: John Michael, Jacob, Julianne, and Jessica. John is a local developer and the owner of Red Moose Lodge in Eden. Bee ae is married to Tammy.
