Abbot Casimir is hoping that construction can begin this fall or next spring, and that a move to the new monastery can happen before the end of 2006. Abbot Casimir Bernas states that he loves Utah and the people from Ogden Valley. “We are committed to staying here as shown in our commitment to construct a new monastery.” Today, the community of monks support themselves by raising alfalfa, grain, and beef cattle, as well as from the preparation and sale of creamed honey, peanut butter, and cereal. Congress is now developing its spending bills including the Interior Appropriations bill, which funds most trail programs in the federal land management agencies. The Administration’s budget request, which is used as a guideline for Congress, includes deep cuts for several trail and recreation programs. Details are still coming out, but thus far the House Interior Appropriations bill, which was recentl approved at the subcommittee level, includes no funds for Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCEF) state assistance or federal land acquisition—two critical programs that proprotect hiking, riding, and biking If enacted, the a a > trail projects, less maintenance, and opportunities to protect trails and provide the right to select which material will be considered for publication. Hike to Protect the Wild Abajo Mtns! The Three Forests Coalition of Southern Utah is seeking enthusiastic hikers to participate in a trail monitoring training and field trip on June 1819. The training will be held in Monticello, Utah, and the hike will take place in the nearby Abajo Mts. along three trails that are threatened by trespass from ATVs, dirt bikes, and other off-road vehicles. The hike will explore gorgeous country and give participants the opportunity to collect data that will be used to help the Three Forests Coalition inform agency planers as they work to protect wild country and human-powered recreation opportunities from motorized trespass.
