Public display and application of the Ten Commandments is a constant source of heated debate and legal wrangling in the United States. The contention demonstrates public ills such as a chronic lack of respect, individual vain pride, and ignorance. But the actual problem with the Ten Commandments is not apparent. To comprehend the commandments by themselves without regard for the God of the Holy Bible leaves a guide for ethics pe seems appropriate for the natural wo ae honesty, and justice are three attributes of mankind that contribute directly to social tranquility and public order. e independent of God existing. Constant revolution, human suffering, and a life ruled by force of arms prevail when those attributes are not generally practiced by man. Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and thou shalt not tell lies are three of the commandments that no honest person should have a problem with. hou shalt not commit adultery has broader meaning — the limited religionist’s view of marriage and sex. This applies honesty, honor and justice to any contract or commitment, impli means and methods terating innumerable things are endless and unwise Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbors’ addresses jealousy’s green monster. Few will defend jealousy or the need to “keep up with the Jones” as being good things. Honor thy father and mother is hard advice for some, but be father and mother saints, egotistical jerks, fascists, drunks, dopers, liars, thieves, etc., they caused you to be in this world with all its wonders and opportunities. It is up to the individual to make the best of it. Honoring father and mother and keeping them as an example—good, bad or indifferent—gives personal values an It will also tend to help successive parents honor their children. To Remember the Sabbath day in this world of tension and strife with its health problems is good advice. One day in seven of getting away, breaking the routine, learning to relax and distract oneself — uplifting pursuits, whether church d God are enolate or not, is wisdom. your doctor These seven commandments should cause no heartburn for anyone. Dealing with the other three, due to the wording, may take a bit more reasoning but: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain is actually another health and social tranquility advisory. Anger, especially anger to rage is illadvised. Anger and objectionable language easily become bad habits. Self discipline effectively relieves many of the problems with violence and other forms of abuse within socie Thou shalt have no other Gods before me is arguably harder to visualize outside religion’s setting but, for persons who have no faith in deity, what is the rudder that guides the purpose of their life? Family? Profession? Country? Ifa person has no rudder, they will drift aimlessly from day to day searching for meaning. Fealty to an individual’s personal purpose of life is necessary to obtain any true self-worth. The First Amendment guarantees individual freedom in choosing a purpose. Once chosen, do not waver! Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. What are the truly important things in this world? For too many, items of value are money, gold, diamonds, fine houses, and fancy cars. Are those not graven images? commandment advisesto place them behind honor, honesty, justice, spouse, children, family, friends, country, etc. in personal importance. Who will deride that advice as unwise? | examination of the Ten Commandments reveals no oppression, bad advice, or other problems among them. Self-righteous religionists, arrogant atheists, and divisive agnostics are a problem for the rest of us who are trying to get along with each other and enjoy a reasonable share of the world’s abundance safely and peaceably while living as we choose, saint and sinner alike! Roger I. Price Huntsville Owner of Old Liberty Church Enjoys New Home—Thanks community for their support When I moved to the Valley last summer and was trying to establish my directional bearings, I aske ntleman about a few addresses I was trying to locate. He replied, “Oh, you new timers have to have addresses! The rest of us folk get along just fine with directions like ‘go up the road a piece and turn near the big oak where the Johnson’s barn used to be . . For the most part,” he continued, “you can find your way around Liberty based on how far you live from the old red brick church. For example, where do you live from the old red brick church?” he asked. “Not very far,” I said. “I live in the old red brick church.” Old Liberty Church in winter. From the first time | walked through the wood and glass paneled doors, I knew this was a special place. Although it is a big undertaking, I am having an enjoyable adventure renovating the structure and learning about my “new” home. Built in 1904, the original one room meetinghouse just celebrated its 100-year anniversary. hile cleaning out an upper shelf in a forgotten closet, I found an original set of blue prints deuiite its < addition. I have since acquired a copy of the printed program which features then President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David O. McKay of Huntsville, as the special guest invited to dedicate the completed building. Several curious neighbors have stopped by to see the recent progress and to tell me that they attended worship meetings, participated in social events, or were even baptized here. Although it has not been a church for over 30 years, people seem to be drawn to this place. One morning, while hosting a business meeting in the building, | noticed two elderly women walking arm in arm down the hallway, peering into classrooms. When | approached them and asked if | could be of assistance, one spoke up and said, “We’re here for the funeral service.” I suppose they had seen several cars parked around the building and assumed that this was still the meeting place, as it most likely had been the last time they were in the Valley. Fortunately, the building has seen livelier occasions during the past year. Family and friends have participated in several painting parties and subsequent campovers, a youth Halloween carnival was held in October, and for several months, while their new school building was being completed in Huntsville, the Kimber Academy called the “old red brick church” home. Thank you for making me feel so at home here in the Valley—the spectacular fireworks display of Liberty Days in my own backyard was an incredible welcome to the neighborhood. Like you, I am drawn to the unequalled beauty of our surroundings and the sense of community that thrives here. As I continue to work on “the old red brick church,” I hope to meet more of you and learn more about the history and magic of this place. I will try to be a good steward of your memories, and will treasure them as my own. If you have j bhehogeanhs or stories of the Liberty c share, please “al them to ‘ oe Hall” c/o P.O.
