He told me that he was sorry about Allen, but he felt bad for the guy and he didn’t think that Allen was that ugly. “Nevertheless,” Jannie said, “I’ve got someone else who really wants to meet you and this time,” Jannie said, “I know he’s attractive because I saw how the girls look at him. He is very popular, and...” Jannie said, “His name is Johan Hattingh and he plays rugby for Helpmekaar’s 7 team! He told me he would love to meet It seemed that Tannie w was out to find me a boyfriend. But I told him I wasn’t interested. He kept on saying how nice this boy is and that I would really like him and, said Jannie in a final desperate effort, “He’s tall!” But I refused to be drawn into such a situation again. Instead I invited my favorite cousin (Jannie) to come to my house later in the day. We loved hanging out, doing homework, making sandwiches, nn listening to music and ies ies on the ra That afternoon I made sure that I was on time for the bus that would ensure my rendezvous with the boy with the smile. And sure enough, there he was! My heart skipped several beats as usual and I stole a backward glance again and again he was standing on the corner waving at me. I was numb all over. Oh, how I loved him. My heart was just overflowing with adoration when I lifted my hand shyly and acknowledged his wave. I ignored the usual bickering going on between my friends about who he was smiling at. I just sat back and dreamed about the next day when we would smile at each other once more. The phone rang not long after I got home. A boy’s voice said, “Hello, I’m Johan Hattingh.” My heart nearly stood still. My legs wanted to buckle under me and I could feel the heat creeping into my face. It was he! It was the boy with the smile. Somehow I just knew it. In the back of my mind I wondered, “Where did I hear that name before?” “T’ve wanted to call you for some time.” He told me. “But I found out that you were dating my best friend, Allen.” He knew Allen—that’s weird. Then I thought, he isn’t only handsome, he is noble too He went on “But today I could call you because Allen told me that you ended the relationship and that he wasn’t interested in you anymore.” He said he then asked Allen if he would mind if he called me. And he is a good friend too! I thought. He told me that Allen said oe he did not mind at a I’m the guy who waves at you every day when your bus passes.” Johan said. As if I did not know! I thought while I held onto the phone receiver with trembling hands. Johan then asked me ifI would go with him to a swim gala the next day at his school. He added that there was an entrance fee. That sort of took me by surprise, but before I could reply, he said that the entrance fee was a picture of me to him. Oh, I could just die. He was funny too! That afternoon when Jannie came over I told him all about Johan. “He is the boy I told you about earlier today!” he said in an exasperated voice. “Johan Hattingh! Remember?” I looked at him in amazement. That is where I’ve heard the name before. Jannie smiled at me. “I told you that you would like him!” Our first meeting was even more incredible than in my dreams. All those weeks of our long-distance smiling through the bus window and there we were face to face. I looked up into his face and his wonderful smile was right in front of me — my legs were all Jell-O, I could hardly stand up straight. Jannie was right this time. This boy was very handsome and indeed, he was tall too “Hullo.” Johan said while he looked down into my eyes. His eyes were green with little specks of brown. Almost like my own. I could hardly acknowledge his greeting. We got into the bus. He actually rode the bus into town to meet me so we could drive out to his school together. He was thoughtful too! We sat down and as the bus pulled away, he put his hand over mine. It was as though an electric current went through my whole body. “That was it for me...” I thought. “There would never be anyone again; he would be my love forever. It was Johan’s brother Gerhard who eventually told me that Allen told him that Johan had written the letters to me — from Allen! Allen was not good with words, so he asked Johan, his best friend, to help him write his love letters to me. At first I could not believe my ears, but then | remembered how confused I was reading the letters and trying to imagine the voice on the phone, saying the words in the letters. No wonder I could not match they boy on the phone with the boy in the letter. But the boy in the letter, matched perfectly with the boy with the smile. They expect to see some beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife. The date for this ride is December 18 with a 9:00 a.m. meeting at a place yet to be determined.
