While the staff of The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS) ee the Ws Noise Pollution Ordinance Needed in Ogden Valley Winter is almost here and do you know what that means, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing? No, for me it means a reprieve from the constant drone of noise pollution in the Valley. Noise pollution . . . what’s that you ask? It seems that during the summer days the Valley becomes so inundated by noise that it almost seems ordinary. Whether it is the screaming of boats on Pineview, the shooting up North Fork, ATV’s, diesel trucks (with their modified exhaust or “Jake Brakes”), or my persona favorite—the Harely riders with their roar that can be heard for miles, it is something that has become an unfortunate part of our community. The belief that the Valley would be a respite from noise pollution is why many of us chose to live here. But during the summer months, it seems that the city follows us home. The noise levels that some of these engines emit may be pleasing to the operators, but comparable to a dentists drill to for the rest of us. Are these boaters, drivers, and bikers trying to scream, “Look at me! Look at me! Please, I need the attention!” Or is there just some primeval need to be the loudest thing around?” On a recent hike up from North Fork to Ben Lomond, I was made aware of the inescapability of the noise in the Valley. During the majority of the hike I could hear boats on Pineview, the near constant shooting of rifles, and the motorcyclists enjoying their Saturday ride. Although the hike was beautiful, the noise pollution made it all but impossible to enjoy the sounds of anything but those of large powerful engines. In disgust, I called one of the commissioners to see about enacting a noise ordnance. In response I was told that the, “Commission has no _ in enacting a law that cannot be enforce! I have done a litle research and found that many municipalities have enacted noise ordnances to combat noise pollution ee acca cost (about $300 for a meter and training), so why can’t Weber County? So, I wrote this to get your feedback. Is the noise something to just accept and live with? Should I build a cinderblock wal around my house? Or could a noise ordnance be passed that would still allow reasonable people to enjoy their machinery so the rest of us wouldn’t have to enjoy it with them? If you feel that the County should do something, please feel free to call them at 399-8588. Alan Wheelwright, Eden On Behalf of the Starnes’ Family—Thank you Karen Starnes is home now and she and her family would like everyone to know how much they have appreciated the community’s prayers and support. The outpouring of prayers, love, time, energy, and money from the community and areas beyond has been astounding. The list of people that this family’s tragedy has affected is enormous. Thank you and God bless all who have given of themselves to help this wonderful family during this crisis. It is truly amazing how love can bring such a wide expanse of people together. Love has no boundaries or prejudices. Ask of yourself daily, “What can I do for those around me; how can I love my family, friends, and neuEest in a way that will truly make a difference Everyone has their own ability to give whether it is time, energy, talents, labor, or money. We are all able to give in one way or another and not one aspect is more important than another. That is why we all need to pull together and pool our gifts. Nothing is impossible when we are united in love. Karen’s battle with the glyoblastoma continues to be heart wrenching, costly, and very painful. Please continue to keep Karen and her family in your thoughts and prayers. All kindnesses are greatly appreciated. Karen has given so much to all those she has known; she is embodies love in its purest form, and so goes the rest of her family. One doesn’t touch the lives of so many without first being an example for all of us to follow. Thank you Karen for being our example.
