FOR OL' BOB TO by Leon Slmlster I'd done this, or "If only I'd done that . . . ? Ah, well, you didnt. And didnt. And havent, either. So I most of us theres no point in dwelling on that. No point in blaming yourself -or anyone else, for that matter - for uhalever it is youre slewing about. Things continue to happen, and sadly sometimes the things that happen are forever unchangeable. So. we pick ourselves up and we struggle, sure, hut we go on from there. And our struggling is seldom, if ever, easy, but we humans are a tough species. We survive. Not only do we survive, hut more often than not, we improve upon a very difficult set of circumstances that have been left for us to cope with. Thais where friends come into the picture. I can't immediately recall who said it, but someone, very wise, made the statement. "To have a friend, he one. Good start. Break the ice. Go to that person and offer hope, support, comfort . . . resources. Yes, and it doesn't necessarily have to he the money kind of resources, either. It can be done with the compassionate use of thoughtful services. Something as simple as a hot loaf of bread, a freshly-bake- d cake, maybe, even, or shovjust mowing the lawn eling the snow. Even mailing a few letters for them helps sometimes. ... Washing their car - making it just sparkle - has the effect of suggesting a bright, new beginning for another (hopefully and, by friendly action - suggestively) marvelous day. Or perhaps just listening while they unburden, talk, let off a little pressure. The simple presence of another (listening) human seems to add a quality that quite often supplies a comfortable healing process to one who is troubled. The author, David Hume, put it this way, "There is some benevolence. however small, infused into our bosom, some spark of friendship for human kind, some particle of the drive kneaded into our frame . . ." And another contemporary, Jean-Jacqu- Rousseau wrote: is a natural feeling, "compassion which, hy moderating the violence of love of self in each individual, contributes to the preservation of the whole species. It is this com- passion that hurries us without reflection to the relief of those who are in distress. The literature of history has recorded some remarkable friendship combinations down through the centuries. Oik of the most fascinating was the many, odd, but remarkable, friendships formed with the creator of the dictionary," Samuel Johnson. Odd, because Samuel Johnson was a rather grotesquely deformed man with reputedly horrible manners and, although unquestionably a genius with an incomparably high IQ, was described hy many writers as having a large entourage of friends throughout his life - largely, attributable to his frequent displays of compassion to others. Johnson (1709 - 1784), was an eloquent and colorful speaker (according to the biographer, James Boswell, 1740-1795-), who made incomparable use of his talents with his wit, style, voice, using his remarkably profuse definitions of words in his newly-creatdictionary. So, despite his coarse manner- pf3 living around us in our small county. . Everywhere you look if you take your blinders off. are people who try to live the golden rule of doing unto others as you would have done to you (the good things, that is). The community and surrounding areas were "rocked by the news that a Coalville youth had been killed in a motorcycleauto accident Friday evening. As with all news of that nature, there was a feeling of complete unbelief and sadness that penetrated the air. Compassion toward the family, was immediate and there were numerous acts of kindness extended as people reached (Hit to help in any way they could. The thing that amazed me the most, was the "quiet way in which many acts were handled. While working in my office, people would come in and tell me of yet another persons kindness or something they themselves were doing. All done without wanting praise or thanks, just coming away with a feeling of well being for trying to help out in a very tragic situation. Having a son the same age really brings the hurt home in a big way and my personal sympathy is extended to the family. Recently, in a church class, the teacher asked us to remember a time when we were experiencing trials in our lives and what got us through. The majority of responses were: prayer, faith, friends, and family. 1 have been witness to these same acts this past week and I am so thankful I live in a place where people do care about their fellowman. Having and showing gratitude is something I have been trying hard to do since viewing an Oprah show several years ago. Although not always an easy thing to do, (and I I..! many, many friends. In addition, he not only had the skill to retain friendships, but also to continuously cultivated new ones, as well. Boswell was one of them, writing, in his biography of Johnson, "we ..THEN OL' BOB BRUNG ITOUTTOME SOON AS HE COULD -- BUT HE'S A REAL BUSY GUY.. . cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it tun over, so in a series of kindnesses there is at least one which makes the heart tun over. " He apparently alluded to the fact that friendships, once formed, must be replenished from time to time. Johnson, himself, made this statement, If a man does not make new acquaintances as he advances through life, he will soon find himself left alone. A man. Sir, should keep his friendship in constant repair. Nows the time. Dont "if only yourself into misery later on. Check with your friends today. Or, while you're at it, go make a couple of new friends. This year is certainly going to a lot different around our home, as we took our youngest to UVSC, where he will be attending school. We are now in the "empty nest portion of life.
