Show May 25, 2001 The Summit County Bee Page A7 Four Deaths May Mark The Beginning of The 101 Senior Citizens Critical Days of Summer We extend our sympathies to North Summit BY I .OMSK W ALLACE Wc had a good week even ihinigh More than a hundred lives could be saved if all motor vehicle occupants were properly buckled up this Memorial Day weekend, according to estimates from the National Safety Council. Locally, 20 Utahns have died over the past five years during this busy holiday weekend, and the Utah Safety Council estimates that four Utahns may be faulty injured in crashes this Memorial Day weekend because they did not wear their safety belts. A simple decision to wear a safety belt, could save your life, said Bob Parenti, the Uuh Safety Council President. We urge all motorists to wear safety belts and properly buckle children in child safety seats. The Utah Safety Council offers motorists the following safe driving and traveling tips for this busy weekend: Buckle Up! Safety belt and child safety seat use is the easiest and most effective way to protect yourself while on the roadways. When taking longer trips, allow plenty of travel time so that you can take frequent breaks. Drowsiness can reduce reaction time almost as much as drinking. Don't drink and drive. If you know you will be drinking alcohol, designate a driver who will not drink and can drive you home. Keep a safe following distance; use the three second rule. Drive friendly and be courteous. The Uuh Safety Council encourages everyone to have a safe and fun it was almosl cold enough to need a fire in the fireplace but we toughed it out and had a good time. Just goes to show, we are pretty hardy people, don't you think? President Shirley Phelps conducted. We were happy to welcome Donna Olson who has finally decided she is almosl old enough to be a genuine Senior Citizen. It was nice to see some of our members who haven't been able to be w ith us recently, too. George Perkins celebrated his birthday Tuesday and we helped him celebrate again on Wednesday. After we sang For He's A Jolly Good Fellow, he was presented with a present. Donald and Louise Judd picked it out so Louise got the honor of presenting him with a nice Now, we want you all to know that this was not an ordinary tambourine cause it was autosome graphed by really special people. Maybe not famous but special. (Hjs friends from North Summit Senior Citizens.) He will have it with him whenever the band practices so those who haven't autographed it for him can add their signatures as he wants everyones. George used it in the band practice that very day and our wish is that he will be playing h with us for many holiday and to remember that whatever the activity, protect yourself and your family by buckling up. Over half of all children killed in crashes are completely unrestrained. Never place a child safety seat in front of a passenger side air hag, and always properly restrain all children twelve and under in the back seat. It is by far the safest place. We can't help but think ot lammc Jacobson when someone comes in with fresh watercress. Last year. Kelly Wilde helped in that department but he hasn't been out gathering the stuff yet this season and we kind of missed it. I guess it let's us know some of the beauties of spring. Well, thanks to Gary Face who sent some fresh, crispy watercress to us via George and Shirley Phelps, we once again enjoyed that nice treat. We will be hearing from Joe and the 25th. Beverly Dalton this tell all us about are to They going their experiences in China and in the Panama. It should he interesting. Hope you don't miss it. of Paul Farrell. We are son .' to report that George Bryson is in the VA hospital with what sound like heart problems. Tests have to be taken before wh.u course of treatment is necessary. Wife ish him a speedy recovery. Were happy to report that June Toole is doing very well. She is doing wh.: she is told to do and will be takin; therapy for a while. Wc figure at she is improving, shell be back in no time at all. We are told that fun and laughte helps us look on the bright side o' things. No matter what happens in life, we need to keep on thinking positive. Take this little story told I. me by Donna Bryson last week. Three elderly ladies were sitting around lamenting about their aches and pains. One said. My sight is getting so had 1 can't even see to pu mv make up on. It's no wonder, l'n spilling things. The second one said, "I can sec t do that but I sure can't read the . paper without my magnifying glas-but what really gets me is that I can t hear a thing. 1 bet if a truck ran ove. me. I wouldn't hear it until it was t late." And the third one said, You not be able to see or hear wel but at least you aren't in constan-pailike I am. Why. old Arthur has got in my every joint. My fingers my hies. Why, my ankles and knee-won- 't hardly move anymore and the pain in my neck won't let me turn a hit. One of them spoke up and said. Thank God, we can still drive."
