Utah Attorney General Mark Shuitleff said he has no desire to go after those in polygamous relationships. I must of hearing of the death of people I think a lot I of. thought three last week was enough, hut I was wrong, as my Uncle Fred Wilde (Dad's brother from Orem) died suddenly on Thursday. He loved nature and the outdoors, as was shown by the stories lie told and the pictures hanging on his walls. Moving right along. I must say our son Kandec's wedding was terrific and it is a relief to have it over. It is always an emotional time for a mother lo see her little hoy lookwhich he cering so grown up tainly did in his black tux and tails and tlie bride couldn't have looked more beautiful. Hey! I have another daughter, and here I thought I was the mother of just sons.!!! Our family is certainly growing. The decorations were beautiful, we had a very nice crowd show up to supporl the couple. The flowers were great, tlie cake was so pretty and everyone seemed to have a kit of fun. Guess that could be termed a success. I've always been of the opinion that this American legal-beagle- s- nation is held together by obeying and upholding the laws of tlie land. It's what supplies this country with strength, gives it its unique stability and greatness what makes us Americans proud and virtually indomitable. And because of the fact that investigations into polygamous marriages have revealed many violations of the law - not the least of which is welfare fraud - costing all of us taxpayers gobs of money that could better he used for those who are'truly down and out due to situations (unlike the polygamous not of their own making, it just appears to he not only very unfair, hut dishonest, degenerating and plain disgusting. So. all in all it was a very exciting night all the way around. Congratulations to all tlie graduates from North and South Summit. This is a real milestone in your lives. You have 'accomplished much to get this fur in life. Times may mil have always been easy, but your certificate should let you know you stuck it out and YOU MADE IT!!!!!!! For the story of the week this timely little piece of paper came my way and really hit me. as speed" is something we all seem to do on occasion. Maybe this will help us rethink about it. A man was driving down a road and looking down he noticed he was traveling 73 in a 55 ntph zone. He was upset because he had just been caught for the fourth time in as many months. He then pulled over to the side of the road to wait for his ticket. A surprise of sorts came in the form of the cop who had skipped him. it was a Christian cop from his " own church ward. A guy he was going to go golfing with the next day. Fie jumped from his vehicle and began making same talk, trying to determine if he could talk his way out of a ticket. At this point he was asked to return to his vehicle. 4 ) i i -- Pam s PIace admit that I am getting pretty tired j t . thing. f ound guilly of bigamy (the legal term used lo ennsiei him ol living with more than one wife - in his ease, five) he now fates a sentencing of up lo 25 years in prison plus a fine of 125.000. And if they ure unbuckled, it is twice as likely they will be severely injured or killed. Some will argue it is a matter of personal freedom to drive unbuckled. But the fact is, personal freedoms slop when other people are injured or killed. Seat belts reduce the risk of death for front seat occupants in passenger cars by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50 percent. ln 1999, motor vehicle occupant restraints saved the lives of an estimated 11,197 people over the age of four. If all passenger vehicle occupants over age four used proper restraints, an additional The man got into his vehicle, slammed the door and sat inside wondering what was taking so long to write out a ticket. Rolling down his window a scant two inches, he took a paper handed to him and snceringly stated thanks. Wondering how much this ticket was going to cost he unfolded a paper ki read tlie following words: Dear Jack. I hud a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed il. a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his three of them. I only daughter-al- l had one, and Im going to have to wait until heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did. hut I need to do it again. Even now. Pray for me. And he careful. My son is all I have left. Bob. Jack turned around to see Boh leaving the scene and waited for 15 minutes before he began his drive home, this time when he got home, he hugged a surprised wife and children. Life is precious. Handle with care. With school reaching a conclusion there are going to he a lot of little ones riding bikes, walking to the park or a friends house. We all need to use a little caution and remember to slow down. I just have to relate a fun incident which happened to me last week. A neighbor who was driving 9,553 lives could have been saved in 1999. The cost of unbuckled drivers and passengers goes far beyond those killed and injured. We all in higher taxes, higher pay health care and higher insurance costs. On average, inpatient hospital care costs for unbuckled crash victims are 50 percent higher than for those who are belted, and society bears 85 percent of those costs, not the individuals involved. Every American pays To tUe EdiTOR about $580 a year toward the cost of crashes. If everyone buckled up this figure would drop significantly. By reaching the goal of 90 percent seat belt use, and 25 percent reduction in child fatalities by the year 2005, we will save $8.8 billion annually. Buckling up is the most effective and immediate way to save lives and reduce injuries from crashes on America's roadways. And because we are all personally affected when even one person does nut buckle up. we all must be a part of the solution. You can help solve the problem by making sure everyone is always buckled up in your vehicle on every trip. Animal Protection? Editor: In recent years, your localized U.S. Representative, Christopher Cannon (R-3rd- ), voted against measures to prohibit steel - jaw leghold traps and neck snares on national wildlife refuges. Animals trapped by these devices suffer crushed bones, gangrene, starvation and sometimes chew off their own limbs in futile escape attempts. Cannon was the only representative from Utah to oppose a bill banning interstate commerce in crush videos," in which women from Utah to score zero. In the fall 2000 issues of The Animals Agenda. U.S. Senator Robert Smith .Hampshire) called upon all elected officials to befriend animals. Although as a conservative. Smith believes in limited government, he adds that there is, of course, a role for government, especially when in comes to protecting the least powerful in society. Animals are among the most helpless group, completely disenfranchised and depending on our sense of mercy and humanity to (R-Ne- w spare them from harm and exploitation... I consider it the mark of decent human being and a responsible elected official to be concerned about the humane treat-meof other creatures. I can only hope that when he votes on future animal protection issues. Cannon will open up his heart and let some compassion in. m Jod Freedman ,M Retailers Arrested in Major Meth Sting A joint undercover investigation has led to the arrest of three store owners and two store clerks accused of selling chemicals used to make methamphetamine. The arrests took place at stores in Salt Lake Gty, Woods Cross, and Magna. Undercover agents made two to four purchases at each store. Agents seized 135.683 pseudoaphedrine and ephedrine tablets, enough precursor chemicals to produce 10 pounds of finished methamphetamine, with a street value of $120,000. Eleven law enforcement agencies banded together last April to form the Methamphetamine Precursor Joins Operation. The task force was started to target rogue retailers who have been trafficking in precursors and laboratory supplies for illegal meth labs. .These arrests are just the beginning, said DEA Assistant Special Agent in charge, Bany Jamison. We intend to do everything possible to stop meth cooks from getting the chemicals they need. Federal and state laws forbid anyone knowingly and intentionally selling a precursor chemical to be used for the illicit manufacture of a controlled substance.
