Show OCTOBER Autumn Hiking 1996 in Utah A Moveable Feast 3y Steve Lewis “Nature becomes your teacher, explains Gayen, as Tom and Paula round the last turn in the trail and finally land atop Mt. Aire. The hike from the junction in Millcreek Elbow Fork Canyon to the Parleys and Millcreek Ridgeline has taken over an hour. Finally, our panting stills, and we relax in the presence of great beauty. Lookout Peak and Grandview to Knob and the north, Gobblers Raymond to the south, and the Salt Lake Valley with a streaming sunset to the west. Juniper, Mountain Mahogany, fir, oak and maple spread across the hillside. The fall chill nips at our cheeks, as we quietly gaze in awe at crimson hillsides that in the weeks ahead will be blanketed with snow. have often started off on a walk in the state called mad-mad in the sense of sore-headed, nor mad with tedium or I have set forth dull, null confusion and even thoroughly discouraged. But I never came back in such a frame of mind, and I never met a human being whose humor was not the better for a walk. It is the sovereign remedy for the hot-tempered and the low-spirited; provided, of course, that you know how to walk. — Donald Peattie To the south, veteran Timp hiker, Glade, frantically finishes a fifth roll of film, as Laurie comically stands on all fours and mimics midget mountain goats rollicking below Timpanogos’ Emerald white Lake. Glistening coated goats majestically span the hillside, while the young animals prance. et Above the lake, Alexis, Gerrish and Milt march up Timp’s massive snowfield and take the ridge to the top of one of Utah’s grandest mountain formations. Far to the south in red rock country, the Gervin front forks quiver on Jeremy's mountain bike, as he pounds and powers along the Moab Slickrock Trail to Shrimprock and then finally to the Moab Overlook. Down the road, teens jump into Peek-A-Boo Gulch and then, later, suck in stomachs in Spooky, as they squeeze through short, dark, narrow and photogenic slot canyons. Far to the south, Jesse’s jeep winds past the Straight Cliffs, round Davis Canyon, and then climbs up and over to the top of the Hole In The Rock passage. Another group arrives and an argument erupts over Clinton’s Canyons of the Escalante National Monument. “Oh, you rotten radical Enviro’s,” shouts one. Then a college kid delivers a single-finger salute to the rednecks. “Give this to the mythical Bureau of Livestock and Mining,” he shouts.
