We need his eloquence and courage. Voting for Ross Anderson honors citizens Utah’s Bring on Fall with Pinot Noir Vincent Lambrusco Now that the hot days of summer are behind us and autumn is here, it’s time to think and drink red. As the season changes, so do most people’s eating and drinking habits. With the cooler temperatures of fall and shorter daylight hours, something instinctual makes me crave heartier foods, like beef stews and rack of lamb. I also start thinking about red wine. As the leaves start to fall.and the sky turns gray, there is’ nothing better than herb roasted chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and a good bottle of Pinot Noir to comfort the soul. Pinot noir is thought to be one of the first cultivated grape varieties and was written about as early as the First Century A.D. It is the black (noir) grape of the Pinot family and is related to the Pinot Gris (gray) and Pinot Blanc (white) grape, as well as the lesser Gamay grape responsible for Beaujolais. In modern times, Pinot Noir is known for producing the famed Red Burgundies of France. French Red Burgundy, by law, is made from Pinot Noir and should not be confused with California Burgundy, which is nothing more than generic red wine. French Burgundy, on the other hand, is anything but generic and some of the world’s most magnificent and legendary wines. They also are some of the most expensive and rarest, the grape not nearly as prolific and the vineyards much smaller than others. A little closer to home, Pinot Noir did quite well in California. It is also grown in Oregon, where it has become the red grape of choice among most vintners. After showing some early promise in both states, Pinot had taken a back seat to some of the other red wines. With but a few exceptions, Pinot Noir in this country just didn’t make the kind of hedonistic wines being that were made in France. That is, until the 1994 vintage. Just as ‘94 was good to Chardonnay (the white grape of Burgundy), so was it to Pinot, producing probably one of the best vintages, Tastings of the ‘95s indicate another stellar year. For the consumer, this means there of very good are: a number and enjoyable Pinot Noirs at both ends of the price spectrum. With its silky texture, aromas and flavors of fresh strawberry, cherry, black currant, exotic spice, tea and smoke, Pinot is wonderful to drink and is a very versatile food wine. Among the wines available at the State Wine Stores is the Napa Ridge ‘94 Pinot Noir, with its cherry spice and vanilla accents, it is an excellent value and a best buy at $7.95. Two wines from Villa Mt. Eden are also worth checking out. Made by Jedd Steele, former wine maker for Kendall-Jackson, the ‘94 Cellar Selection, at $9.45, is supple in texture with black cherry and toast. The ‘94 Bien Nacido Grand Reserve, at $15.35, is a richer wine with spice, toast, black cherry components. With a classic Pinot texture, it is very appealing.
