Show SITE TE OF CALVARY CAL VA NT 1 0 remarkable archaeological FIND IN JERUSALEM undoubted site of the trag a c event of the ages the crucia x on of u christ D sc at last within the past few das days some an lent clent remains have been uncovered in etl al ik R Is part of the recently D sc wall of constantine with the church of the holy sepulchre in the back ground jerusalem that are of unusual interest and throw a clear light on the much discussed question of the site of cal vary the costly and imposing rua rus sian hospice to the east of the site of the church of the holy sepulchre was reared for the special purpose of enclosing and conserving a bit of ancient wall and a gateway which were unearthed some years ago the gateway gatei ay is covered with ith a large glas case on oil the northern side of the rear wall of the russian hospice there has just been brought to light by the re inoval of rubbish in preparing for some alterations and improvements another bit of old wall which is on a line with and part of the wall within the russian hospice and another 0 old 1 d gatei gateway ay it Is now clear that all of this wall and both of these gateways date from the time of constantine Constant lne having been built by him to enclose the area on which he erected the brines coloring coi ering the then recently discovered tomb of christ and cal vary the gateway just uncovered opens inward toward the church of the holy sepulchre the massive pil lars being rabb eted on the western side it Is nearly on a line with the two domes of the church thus opening almost exactly upon the present buich which occupies the site of con at antines original buildings the place where the old bolt of the door abraded the south pillar Is plainly visible from this gateway the wall extends south to a point within the hospice where it turns east viard and the otha othe old gateway so carefully conserved Is in this part of the wall and so Is at right angles to the recently discovered gateway the pivot socket in the stone sul sill made for the door to swing in show that it opened southward southard uto the same area within this gateway still exist in situ fragments of the old pavement of constantine Constant lne some eight sears 3 ears ago in digging in the narrow passage way on the north side of the russian hospice an old was found in clifia charac which had been cut into the stone of Constant lne s wall vial on its outside face and a little to the south of the gateway just discovered it read as follows r in ahr the name of god the most mer cibul the most gracious the high command has gone forth from his majesty s victorious presence for pro teching and repairing this place of worship and that no non moslem should enter it and that no one should transgress this decree but rather should comply with it what hat spot this may refer to la is not certain it could not point to the ti I 1 J 4 I 1 plan showing the course of the old wall and gateways of constantine wh ch once surrounded the tomb of chr st and calvary church ot of the holy sepulchre which has never been used as a mohammed dan shrine L F P BALDWIN |
