Show GREA T SCENIC ROAD HUDSON TO BE paralleled BY MATCHLESS HIGHWAY j part of the good roads appropriation of new york state to be devoted to this work new bew I 1 lork ork state leads in the good roads movement the fifty million dol lars appropriation making it possible to carry on an elaborate scheme of road improvement such as no other state has dared think of and by all odds the most remarkable part ot of this scheme is the projected highway which is to open where the road emerges from the storm king up the hudson highlands along the west bank of the river and place west point in the line of through travel ml routes at present leading up the west bank of the hudson turn sharply to the laft J ft at about nack nyack or haer haver straw they iun run thence far back into the country to the line ot of the erie railroad and return to the river only at newburgh and cornwall these wide detours are made to avoid the great triangular patch of country in eluded in the range of the western highlands across whose rugged heights there exists at the present time scarcely one first class road t running from cornwall to stony point where it will connect with the 14 system of roads leading down back of the palisades this new highway will make inake complete an unrivalled boule vard sixt sixty miles long fol following louing the hudson river closely for a large part of its distance building operations are now being carried on along some ten miles of the route not ot only in coast but also in engin beering and constructive features this load will be notable from the seen ic standpoint it will be unrivalled it will pass close to every prominent river peak of the highlands one part of its course will penetrate a wild re xe gion now almost inaccessible even to the climber another will open up a i country whose present rough road 1 las lias never invited general travel on A wheels there will be more than a thousand feet of mountain tunnelling tun nelling and cut ting of benches in the rock precipices will be skirted and mountain ravines will be bridged the road will cross streams and pass waterfalls not corn com known and will skirt a wild lake nestled in a mountain side tie cornwall west point section will constitute the really reany remarkable aart of the highway it is estimated that the first two dad and a half miles of 0 is part of the road will cost something like to b i id and it will require pr perhaps haps more for the remaining stretch to west point aside aiom ft cm the magnificent outlook on the country and the H idson river which tills this road will co milland running as it will along the mountain sides at an elevation ot of about feet it will practically make west point accessible from the north tor for vehicles for the first time one of the most picturesque sec see eions of the road Is where it skirts the northern slopes of storm king and N INA k ak aw ta where the road emerges from the storm king looks out of the wide expanse of new burgh bay at cornwall the road will extend toward the point of the moun woun tain for a short distance and then dive straight into the bulk of the old hill there will be nearly a thousand feet of tunnelling tun nelling and bench work through the mountain where the road is to be dl erectly beneath the bulk of the moun tain there will be openings at inter vals from which may be obtained views of breakneck and mount taurus and the hudson river far b beneath at several blaces i laces the road will emerge from its tunnel ad be carried along the edge of the cliffs on benches it will finally emerge on the south side of storm bing ring to find itself on the edge of precipices the same great cliffs which excite the admiration 0 of tou tourists rits up the hudson |
