After over a decade of working on various projects with Barnard, Bames knew just who to request as the choreographer for the Festival's 'production of Forever Plaid. Barnard was the perfect choice for Barnes and the Festival because of his past collaborations with Barnes including West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof. Ten Types, and a of the Pacific Conservatory Performing Arts Theatrcfest production of Forever Plaid and his 20 years of experience as a choreographer. Most recently, Barnard's work has been seen in Disneyland's productions of Pocahantas and The Hunchback or NoireDame. During his 20 ycjt career as a choreographer he has worked with several Phoenix theatres and West Coast theatres including, nine summer seasons at the PC'PA Theatrcfest. He was recently made the artistic director for the Phoenix Iheatre. Barnard's rehearsal schedule at the Festival only spans 10 days. But for that short time he will work hard getting the four actors in Forever Plaid to confe together as a cohesive group. Although his short rehearsal schedule is unusual at the Festival, Fred C. Adams, Festival founder and executive producer said that because Michael had such a great working relationship with Paul in the past and they had already done Forever Plaid together, Paul knew that he could choreograph the play in half the normal time. Barnes first met Barnard while doing Guys and Dolls in Phoenix, where they developed a mutual re"When spect and friendship. Barnard was ;nnounccd as the choreographer for Guys and Dolls, turn out at the auditions increased n d because he was so and because people iove working with him. said Bames. The quality of work and because we had such a good time working on t'tat show. I endeavored to get Michael out of Phoenix to work on projects that. I was directing on the west coast I think of Paul as a mentor, said Barnard. He's a very mspnng director who is very clear about what he wants. He is also very demanding but very nurturing at ' same time, which is very difficult to find from a choreographer and actors perspective." Barnes had equal praise for Barnard's work, which he says is both imaginative and demanding. He makes everyone work hard, but he also makes it very fun fv the cast and everyone involved in the production." said Bames He has a of actors to stretch way challenging w hat think beyond they they are caof. lie's pable always getting great results whether a person is a trained dancer or not." Barnes is a veteran director at the Festival His work can currently be seen in the Festival's summer season production of Shjkespeare's Troilus and Cressida. He is also the director for the fall season play The C'ompleat Works of Wllm. Shkspr (Abridged). Past directing assignments at the Festival include Henry V. Henry IV Parr I. Henry VIII and Tartuffe.
