With the Department of Modem Dance presenting the choreography of major figures in the contemporary modem :Lar Lubovitch, dance world Molissa Fenley, Scott Kocster, and Doug Varone - this spring's PDC production promises to be one of the Salt Lake City's arts and entertainment highlights of the year. The three young musicians who won first place honors at the 1998 Utah Symphony Youth Guild Competition will solo with the Utah Symphony on Jan. 19, 1999, at 7 p.m. in a special concert at Abravanel Hall. Violist Haleigh Gustaveson, 18, violinist Sarah Moench, 14, and pianist Evan Shinners, 12, will each perform a movement from a concerto with the Utah Symphony under the direction of Assistant Conductor Kory Katseanes. Gustaveson will perform the third movement of David a Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Bracsavciseny, Moench will be featured in the third movement Weiniawskis of Concerto in D minor and Shinners will solo in the first movement of Mozart's 19th Piano Concerto. The Youth Guild Competition was held in May 1998 and was judged by Joseph Silverstein. The three winners were selected from 54 participants divided into age categories. Gustaveson placed fust in the senior division for ages 16 to 18, Moench won the junior division for ages 13 to 15 and Shinners topped the elementary division against participants aged 10 to 11 In addition to the opportunity to solo with the Utah Symphony, the three winners also received cash awards. Haleigh Gustaveson began music studies at age 4, beginning with the violin and later switching to viola. Gustaveson is a member of a string quartet, the "Quarter Notes, which performs year round at prominent social functions. She has played with Disneys Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Premier Viola Ensemble. She currently represents Brighton High School as the Music Sterling Scholar and teaches and conducts music. Sarah Moench recently played with the Utah Symphony as a 1998 Salute to Youth artist She has played in ensemble! from Honolulu to Chicago and presently performs with Jack Ashton's Young Chamber Players and with her brother, sister and mother in the Moench Family String Quartet Moench has won dozens of awards, including first, second and third place ribbons for strings at the Utah State Fair. Evan Shinners began piano studies at age 9 and currently studies with Gary Amano and Ralph van der Beek.
