For instance, during 1999, a 1994 vehicle would be five 5), and years old (19991994 in second bracket the of fall would then three older years yet being newer than six years old. Also, the agebased fee is always due at time of registration. That means: new cars, which previously were exempt from property tax in the first year, now require payment of the fee with the initial registration and, the fee is due on cars that are registered more than once in the same year (i.e., a car with current registration that is sold and then reregistered by the new owner). Because the new fee is not based on the vehicles fair market value, it is not tax deductible for federal in- come tax purposes, as is the 1.5 per-- " cent property tax. 1990-198- make vehicle registration fees more uniform, remove the inflationary effect of the fee, bring Utah vehicle registration renewal costs more in line with neighboring states, and to simplify the motor vehicle renewal administration process. Vehicles in this category having evennumbered model years must have safety inspections in evennumbered years, and vehicles having oddnumbered model years must have safety inspections in oddnumbered years. Example: a 1997 model year vehicle must have a safety inspection when it is registered in 1990. Vehicles with model years five years old and older must pass safety inspections every year. Safety inspection is not required for trailers, regardless of age. President-elec- t, Shirley Phelps.
