How did an obscure, young artist from New Orleans get to be part of a prestigious jazz concert series? Easy! He just happens to be one of the most gifted jazz artists of his generation and one of the most appealing performers on the concert circuit today. Mr. Davenport reminds one of a young Chet Baker. He plays beautiful, lyrical improvisations and he sings too. His sole CD on the TELARC label is a gem. You may not recognize his name today, but as his star rises in the future, you will long remember the concert you heard in the sunrise of his career. Jeremy, who is 26 years old, looks even younger. His gift of melody belies his age. It is the sound of a more mature musician. Nothing he does is frantic or Both his trumpet playing and vocalizing are fluid, like fine oil sliding on a bright metal surface. He performs both standards and originals he himself has penned. According to Gordon Hanks and of the Jazz at the Hilton series who heard him at a festival last winter and immediately signed him: "he represents the new breed of musicians who have committed themselves to lyrical, melodic, mainstream jazz. Mike Mac Kay, the producers 96-9- 7 Season We've never heard anyone play better in a quartet setting than Jeremy.1' That's a powerful recommendation from two gentlemen who have been involved with every concert presented in the Jazz at the Hilton series since its inception. They continued: "We couldn't get enough of him at the Paradise Valley Jazz Party in Scottsdale. And he continuously brought down the house as the most loved player on the program." This is even more surprising since the line-u- p of jazz legends included Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton, Lew Soloff, Plas Johnson, Herb Ellis and many others. The Jeremy Davenport concert will be held in the Seasons Ballroom at the Salt Lake Hilton Hotel beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15. Tickets are available in advance and at the door. Jazz at the Hilton is a community service whose primary goal is the presentation of the best live jazz in America.
