The weather here, as in many parts of the west and northwest, has been extremely dry. Weather records have been kept in Coalville for well over 50 years by Mr. C. Bryant Copley. For those interested in weather extremes, the following records kept by Mr. Copley are provided: Highest temperature, 99, June 23, 1954; lowest temperature, 33, Feb. 5, 1982; latest spring frost, 26, June 15, 1949; earliest fall frost, 24, Aug. 21, 1974 -- With the general deer season coming to a close, Garth Carter says some people may be looking for a variety of ways to cook venison. Carters recommendation: venison sticks, a recipe from Bradford Angiers "Codling Venison and other Natural Meats as a tasty change from the usual venison fare. The recipe calls for the venison steak to be cut in strips similar to french fries, but make them about twice as thick. Dip the strips in melted butter or margarine and lay in a single layer in a shallow greased pan. Dust with garlic salt, paprika, monosodium being killed but are "Nipped Ire temperatures lower than : 32. Beans are especially vulnerable to "light frost. Some of these frosts, (not killers) are: July 31, 1950, 31; July 19. 31; July 3, 1922, 29. In measuring snow depth and snow fall, you will note two things: 1) they may not be the same, and 2) the most snow in one day may not result in the most on the ground. The snow on the ground (greatest depth) will depend on the maximum temperature for the day, and the condition of the earth when the snow begins to fall, i.e. was it frozen? Was it dry when the snow began to fell? Was it hard packed or was it loose? Deepest snow on ground, 19 in., Dec. 24, 1949; most snow in one day, 24 in., Jan. 29. 1980; most water in one day, 2.6 in., Aug. 21, 1986; most rainfall in one year, 26.2 in., 1983; least rain fall in one year, 8.7 in. 1935, average rain fall, 14.1 in. As many have observed, 1987 in Coalville is a dry year. It is well below the average being 1987, Many "tender vegetables will stand as low as 28 without glutamate and parsley flakes. Turn them occasionally while baking in a preheated oven at 400 degrees until the venison sticks are golden brown. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and serve hot. Venison sticks will satisfy even the most fussy eaters.
