Exercising has become a fun time of our day. Elmer welcomed the Sam Burgess' bade from their winter in Florida. We are glad to have Sam and Donna bade with us. Ann Sargent was also a guest Our cooks prepared a delicious dinner for us. We had a macaroni and ham casserole, hot rolls that melted in our mouths, honey, cabbage and carrots, jello salad and luscious hot donuts for dessert. Elmer announced that we would have a surprise for Mothers Day. There were SO seniors to enjoy themselves. May 8th It was a horrible day, more like the middle of winter - blustery snow. Becky Richards,' the .county nurse, was ill and Afton GmVna took over our exercise . in Sacramento. Later, he moved to Alaska where he was a cook on an oil rig. Margaret wishes he would cook for her more often. Not only does he fix fantastic food he also does all his own dishes along the wayl Richard currently works for Burton Lumber in Salt Lake and runs Chalk Creek Gardens, his true love, where he utilizes his Richard , talents of landscaping. also likes to fish, hunt, scuba dive,. and tube down Chalk Creek. He once took his mother, ' in a canoe, from the fair grounds out to the reservoir. Richard has another talent, he claims to be able to juggle watermelons! No witnesses have stepped forward to substantiate his claim, however. Maybe we could get a demonstration at the fair? Richard is the proud father of two daughters, Megan is 13 and lives in Salt Lake and' Robin Marie is 3V4 months old. Margaret was born in Plain-wel-l, Michigan which she says is smaller than Coalville. She graduated as Valedictorian from Plainwell High. She then went to Western Michigan University ' where she got her degree in communications with an emphasis in theater and she graduated , She Summa Cum Laude. received her Masters degree in Drama from the University of Texas. Margaret has had many ., interesting jobs. She directed a Children's Theater in Austin, Texas. She then went to work for K.R.L.N. T.V. which was the original producers of Austin City Limits. Margaret has also free lanced in film and T.V. ions as an actress, and She ran her own writer. . . Richard and Margaret Aoki Margaret also likes to read and cook, tube down Chalk Creek and watch her husband work - she isn't allowed to help. In the last few months she has taken up a new interest, Robin Marie is now. the most fun thing in her' mothers life. .' Richard and Margaret moved to Coalville in November of 1982. Richard wanted to get back to the Salt Lake area but ne didn't want to live in the city so he asked Margaret where she wanted to live and she said, by running water so they found their home in Coalville, right along side the creek. Margaret found cause to wonder at the wisdom of her decision during the floods of 1983. However, other than that they have enjoyed their home here. . . . . . Richard Aoki. Margaret, He and his wife are this week's neighbors. Richard's love of gardening is in born. It is in his heritage. Aoki, in Japanese, means Green Tree. Richard's grandfathers also had a love for growing things. They both opened up some of the first fruit stands in Salt Lake City. His grandfather, Peter Aoki, was also a minister and founded the Japanese Church of Christ in Salt Lake. Richard began developing his talents at the age of seven when he first started working in his fathers fruit stand selling fruits and flowers. Richard was bom and raised in Salt Lake City. He graduated from South High where he played varsity football for three He also wrestled and years. ' product-directo- r. The- Cook of the Maridee Coon of Maridee grew up in where she went to school. She and her husband, John, moved to Granger, Utah where they lived for ten years. They now. make their home in Samak where they have lived for the past ten years. 1 1 V4 Baby Robin Marie I'm certain that anyone who has driven down Chalk Creek Road in the last few years is familiar with Chalk Creek Gardens. Kotowicx North Summit Wednesday May 7th was anything but a perfect day. It was raining and blowing again and the hills were white with a covering of unwelcome snow. As we entered the Senior Center even the band Wanship Ward Choir in a special musical production of The Holy City on Saturday, May 9th, at 7:30 p.m. Everyone invited. After prayer and blessing on the food by Floyd Tryoh, lunch was served to about 54 people. It consisted of beef stew, garlic bread, vegetable plate, drink and chocolate chip cake with ice. cream. After lunch Amy Shaw announced that she had a musical program for us. It consisted of musical numbers by three young girls who were learning to play their violins. Their names were: Tawnie, daughter of Fred and Sylvia Mortenson. Treston, daughter of Ray and Lisa Wagstaff and Liza, daughter of Glen and seemed to compliment the weather, they were playing I Get the Blues when it Rains". But as we were met by President Ball and the club members we enjoyed their welcome friendship, the weather was forgotten and everyone enjoyed the proceedings of the day. Maty Marchant, county representative was present as usual. We enjoy her attendance and think she should become one. of our members. We were happy to meet some of our members who Frankie Brown. Then one day she received a phone call from a Jim Aoki, Richards brother. He wanted her to come and do a Renaissance Festival. Richard was working in Alaska at that time and decided he needed a vacation. He chose to visit his brother in Texas - a good place to dry out from the Alaska weather. He planned on staying for a few days but he met Margaret and stayed for a few weds. Two months later he again returned from Alaska this time for his wedding. Richard and Margaret were married at the Renaissance Fair grounds in an area that Richard had helped to landscape. Margaret moved to Alaska with Richard and continued to do some acting in commercials. She also learned to do bodkeeping and helped her husband and his brother in their construction business. She now helps run the ' flower shop and she also works for Intermountain Health Care where she is a media specialist producing training, communication, and instructional video tapes. Margarets main interests are theater and music. She plays the viola and the. piano. She .also taught herself to walk the tight rope and put it to use in her performing. In 1966 Richard served in Vietnam as a member of the Green Berets, one hundred and first Air Bom Paratroopers. Then in 1967 he was sent to Thailand. They had decorated the dining area with balloons and posters on the wall, Happy Mothers Day and Happy Birthday to Letha. It was realty festive. We were served a hot roast beef dinner. Letha furnished a beautiful birthday cake and we had ice cream served with it There were 62 seniors who enjoyed the day. After the dinner we went bad: to the bldg, where our program was waiting for us. The program was as follows: a double trio consisting of: Margaret Walker, Mona Prescott Edna Fitzgerald, Bonnie Lasche, Bene Taylor, Lorraine Beer.1' They sang At Their Mothers Knee" accompanied by Deanna Georgi. A reading by Norene VanTassell- -" When Gcid Created Mothers". Michele Coon played two piano solos. Song by Norene Park and Polly Park "0 Lord My God, accompanied by Jennie Park. The weather was cold but the spirit inside warm and congenial as usual. Our good deed ladies,- Blanch Cox and Lillian Robbins were busy as usual carrying out their duties. A huge pan of candied popcorn was contributed by Mae Hopkin and Elanore McRnight to the members before lynch time. It was delicious. After announcements. reading of, minutes, and the blessing of the food, by Maxine Wright 4 lunch was served to 53 members. . menu included turkey 'Lunch and dressing, potatoes and gravy, fruited jello salad, punch and birthday cake with ice cream to celebrate Ruth Taylors birthday. , : Mrs. Ina Jones made and contributed peanut butter balls which were served after lunch. President Ball announced that Ruth Taylor had contributed dub in honor of $100.00 to the her husband Lynden, who had passed away. He said it was deeply appreciated. Since it was a Mothers we were happy tto, welcome some mothers who have not Attended lately; Afra Ren, Maybelle Bulkxk and Lucille Powell. The band presented a musical program in honor of mothers. They played That Wonderful Mother of Mine, I , I- Had Such a Pretty Dream,.: Mamma and others. Solos were rendered by Ralph Garfield, Pat ODriscoll, and Laura Roberts. Poems were given by Mar Hennek. Amy Shaw Lonnie Jacobsen. Lovely small favors were presented to all mothers,.- handmade by Fawn, Amy. Elanore and Mar. indeed it was a very special day.
