Show March FOCUS 4E 26-Ap-ril 1, 1981 From the Worlds Longest Hogie to the smallest cupcake There are still plenty of people around who were lucky enough to taste a slice that won him his imperial Hogie at the Wasatch County Fair in 1976. The sandwich was 410 feet long and weighed 475 lbs. It was put together by the Bates family of Heber City and only missed qualifying for the Guiness Book of Records because Dan Bates runs a commercial bakery. Nevertheless Dan Bates is still considered the Hogie King in the Heber Valley and his patrons are confident that even his smaller projects are baked with the same zeal that the bread and the pies of the World's Longest reputation in 1976. Maybe it is because Bate's Bakery is a family business and cakes and cookies are so good. When you put the family name over the door in a small town, you will hear about it soon enough if the product isn't up to par. With that in mind, Dan Bates bought Seiter's Bakery in 1963. He continued with much the same things that Seiters carried but added a few recipes of his own. The whole wheat bread, without preservatives, became popular right away as was the freshly baked Squaw bread. Keeping pace with the demand bee came a job in itself but baking, Dan explains, is only part of the business. The bakery also runs a sizeable catering service for banquets and weddings. For three years, Dan catered for the location crews working on the Grizzly Adams tele; vision series and last year, he provided meals for the hungry YCC crews working in the Wasatch County recreation areas. On a regular basis, he and his er full-tim- crew (mostly family mem- bers) prepare hot meals for Baker, businessman, Scoutmaster, former Bishop and school board member Dan Bates is always on the go. On Monday morning Bates Bakery bustles with activity.
