GERMAIN patrices@thespectrum.com ST. GEORGE — One of the nice things about being a landscape photographer here — either professional or amateur — is that you don’t have far to go in Southern Utah to find a good shot. Frank Feltner, Santa Clara, winner of the Virgin River Photo Contest, said with two national parks close by and the scenery found in the area, all you have to do is go out and start driving around and you'll see things to photograph. “It's great to go out to Zion when it snows, Feltner said of his January photo- . When I dropped her off at school several blocks from our house, I needed to stop at the cleaners as I passed right by it on the way home. By now it had stopped raining. When I got out of the car, I noticed the most vibrant, brilliantlycolored rainbow I have ever since in my life. The wide, colorful stripes were well-defined in a complete arch, end to end, to the earth on both sides. I was awe-struck! It was breathtaking! It was so very beautiful that it created goosebumps which pricked my skin from head to toe. At seeing its beauty, I wanted to share it with my family. I immediately thought of what transpired that morning. I felt ashamed of the bitterness that was in my heart toward my little girl. The scene truly melted the icy feelings, pulling at myheartstrings which brought tears to my eyes. AsI headed home, the rainbow was still in plain view. I could not take my eyes off it and I was amazed at how long it was in my view, no mat- ter the angle I was driving. It was as if as long as I kept my eyes fixed toward it, everything was rosy. At one point it looked like -we were going to drive right under it — as if it were a bridge leading us into a better world. Each end of the rainbow stretched all the way to the earth, shining and glimmering at both ends. The desire swelled up inside of me to ‘chase the rainbow’ to the very end to find the imaginary treasure. Instead of turning into our housing tract, I asked my two little boys in the backseat, Christopher, 3, and Matthew, 2, “Shall we chase the rainbow? There's a pot-of-gold at . | the end, you know: I heard a resounding chorus ° Yes!” We drove up and down several streets, turning right, then turning left and right - again while keeping our eye on the rainbow, so we wouldn't lose sight of the end of it. When I turned down a familiar street, for a moment I didn't realize where I was because I was concentrating at looking at the end of the rainbow. To my amazement, I saw through tear-filled eyes, the end of the rainbow, still in all its brilliant hues, vibrantly shining on my house! The ‘pot-of-gold’ or happiness that I sought was to be found in my own home all along. When Lesley and Cathryn returned home from school that afternoon, I gathered them in my arms and told them how sorry I was for my behavior that day and that they truly were my treasure. How many are chasing rainbows every day only to find disappointment or confusion in their lives? Look for the rainbow, for you might be surprised that it, too, is shining on your house. * ITEMS ALREADY BAKED DOWN!
