I had been up and down all night with the baby, and when the first ray of morning peeked through the drawn drapes, I didn’t ‘want to get up on such a bleak morning. Since I needed the car that day, I had to take my husband to the freeway to meet his car pool. She was one of the first to participate in the first Life Flight program here in Utah, at Salt Lake City’s LDS Hospital. She stayed with the program for seven years, and then left the program. In 2003, now living in St. George, she rejoined the team. Jan said she always liked helping people; that’s why she joined Life Flight. “All the flights are tragic, but you always have a chance to help someone’ It was a nontraditional way to do the job she was already doing as an emergency room nurse. One of her most memorable flights was with a cancer patient. He had already been diagnosed, and the doctors here couldn't help-any more, so he was to be flown up to ned Clits: — Yourcommunity Salt Lake in case there was something they could do to keep the cancer at bay. “L asked him ‘Is there anything I can do for you?” He replied, saying that his wish would be to fly over his ranch before he died. After contacting the pilot and the flight coordinator, they took the slight detour to the area just east of Zion where his ranch was located. When they had located the ranch, she recalls that he had an ear-to-ear smile, tears running down his face. “To me, that’s what it’s all about; going that little extra mile,’Call sai The man died three weeks later, but Jan still has the letter that his wife wrote on an envelope she had on hand, simply thanking her for taking them over the ranch. ter was the most powerful letter she had received. “We don't know the impact we can have on them’ In addition to Life Flight’ and her regular job, Jan has started her own business, examining rape victims. Previously, it had been done by doctors and nurses, but the doctors weren't keen on the exams. When the nurses that had assisted them were called in to court to testify, there was no set way to do it. Now, Jan and her nurses take the exams. They have been in business for seven years, and it’s getting worse as they go. “Last year, we had 55 rape exams. This year, we have already had 55, and we still have November and December’ Ofher extra jobs, Jan says, “Im proud to be a flight nurse.
