Show THE INTERMOUNTAIN CATHOLIC exactly when the oil wells are going to produce; we have known every six months for the last five years. Wo want you to know, Bishop, that not even the unfaithful oil wells of Carbon County have dampened our enthusiasm for this great Diocese and intermountain country. When I say to you, your Lordship, that your priests stand ready to go wherever you ask them, I know that they mean it. There are places in this Diocese where no man would want to go. . There are places where a man is over a days journey from a railroad, where he will read the Sunday morning paper Monday noon. There are places where a priest has to live without what may be considered ordinary necessities of life; where he must undergo privation. Your priests are ready to go into those places. They made that decision before they came here. We knew what we were getting into when we came to this Diocese. And we stand ready to give whatever we have, of physical and mental energy. You may have tasks, above our capabilities but you will have none above our good intentions, or our desires, or our ambitions. In behalf of the clergy, therefore, I will say to you, that we not only welcome you, but we pledge you our unqualified loyalty and eagerness to serve. We have dedicated our lives to serving God and His Church and to serving particarly in this Diocese; and the pleasure we get is the administering of the Sacraments to the Cath olic people you place under our charge. And I want to say to you there are wonderful Catholic people here, wherever you find them. I once had a man come to me for his Easter duty who had ridden horseback the better part of three days from his camp in the mountains and who, of course, had to fide back again over the same long path. We have many Catholics of that sort here and they are very edifying and inspiring to us. I believe that it would not be out of place for me to say, although it is not designated of Salt Lake and the Diocese also welcome you. It b in my subject, that the my privilege and my pleasure to have many acquaintances, and I want to assure people of the city and the Diocese will welcome you whenever they you that the have an opportunity. You will find them very broad and as generous as the people of any Dipcese or Staje in this Union; and I know that the people here will respect you wherever you go, will welcome you into their gatherings, and I know that they are now looking forward to the pleasure it will give them to meet you. In behalf of the clergy I wish to say that we welcome you and pledge you our support and our service in any way that you may call for it non-Catholi- cs non-Cathol- ic non-Cathol- ic non-Cathol- ) ic 33 7 |
