September 19. 2000 Man escapes serious injury in close call involving load of rebar thieves snatch inland motors ln-the-kn- ow Investigators say that at least two thieves who knew exactly what they were doing, are responsible for the theft of approximately $22,000 worth of Ajax atarter motors taken from working pumps at Inland Production oil locations in the south Myton area. Its been almost exactly twoyears since thieves pulled the same stunt, getting away with about $33,000 worth of the expensive equipment. At that time, thieves also targeted locations operated by other oil companies, stealing the same item. In all, a total of 33 starter motors were stolen from Inland as well as Wild Rose Resources and Cochrane Resources, Inc. Inlaid sustained the greatest damage, with 27 motors missing over the Labor Day holiday in September 1998. According to Duchesne County Sheriff's Det. Sgt. Wally Hendricks, in the most recent theft 20 motors were stolen sometime during the weekend of Sept. 9. Hendricks said that deputies are following up on leads based on evidence left at the A Utah Highway Patrol trooper said David Ames, 28, Roosevelt, was lucky he was not killed when rebar suddenly came hurdling at him as he headed southbound on Ioka Lane. The accident occurred at 11:24 a.m. last Thursday, Sept 14, whena load of plywood and rebar being r flatbed goosehauled on neck trailer feil offas Jeremy Crosier, 23, Roosevelt, made a right-han- d turn from the highway onto Ioka Lane. According to Utah Highway Patrol trooper Luke Stradinger, the turn caused the weight of the building materials on the trailer to shift and fall off . The materials were dragged for a short distance before they came lose. They took down a nearby stop sign before being projected into the driver-sid- e door of Amess vehicle as . it passed on the opposite side of the scene. The used motors were valued at $1,100 each. The motors cost $2,650 new. "These things are like gold. If you can find them used, youre lucky. Right now I have been unable to find any used," said Mike Guinn, district engineer for Inland. The pumps weigh about 50 pounds each and are no bigger than a 10 x 6 box. Law enforcement offix cials say it probably took thieves just minutes to clutch the pump while the engine was running, remove the four bolts holding the motor, the pump, and throw the motor into a pickup bed. The pumps will run even with the motors removed, but if they shut down they are out of production until another starter motor can be installed. Two years ago Inland offered a $ 10,000 reward for informat ion leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the thefts, but obtained no leads. oil-fie- ld atwo-by-fbu- Approximately a dozen pieces of rebar were embedded in the left front panel and drivers door of Amess 1995 Mercury Tracer and stopped about a foot away from hitting him. "It was similar to a pitch fork" flying toward the car, Stradinger detailed. There were no irjuries. Crosier was dted for failure to secure his load. 300-poun- d Tribe files in court to By Lezlet & The attorney for a group of mixed-bloo- d Indians which nils themselves the Timpanogos Tribe has filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent the Division of Wildlife Resources and the State of Utah from prosecuting Timpanogos Tribe members who hunt on the Ute Reservation. Last month the State Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources and the U.S. Attorneys Office issued statements saying that all hunters are expected to obtain proper hunting permits from the state or Ute Indian Tribe to hunt on non-trulands, including members of the Timpanogos Tribe. They warned hunters to check their permits to make sure they were issued by the proper authorities. Anyone caught without legal permits would be criminally prosecuted, said both state and federal officials. The statements came in response to a letter sent last month to the state and DWR by Timpanogos Tribe Executive Director Mary Meyers. The letter stated that Timpanogos Tribe members would be hunting elk and deer on the Uinta Valley Reservation "carrying Timpanogoa subsistence permits and were not to be stopped byf and game officials. The Timpanogos Tribe is not recognized by the federal government, but purports to be the group referred to by President Abraham Lincoln when he established an executive order in 1861 declaring the land preserved for the Indians of the Utah Territory. In court documents, Heber attorney Michael Humiston requested the court hear the motion in a timely manner because hunting season in the Uintah Basin began last Friday iSept. 15). He also stated that his clients will be harmed "if arrested and prohibited from hunting ... they would be deprived ofa source of food, and suffer a serious disruption of their culture and way of life." According to Humiston, the Timpanogos "are doing nothing this vear that they have not done, unmolested, every year since before there difference is that this year, the Timpanogos Tribal Council sent formal notice to the defendants and the Ute Tribe. According to the 1990 Census, less than half of Native American households on reservations possess that most basic of telecommunications services, the telephone (as compared to 944 of all Americana) To help remedy this problem, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in cooperation with the National Exchange Carrier Association, will be conducting the Indian Telecom Training Initiative (ITT1 tribal leader tele2000), a four-da- y communications seminar. This historic trainingevent, which takes place Sept. 25 - 28, 2000 at the Raduson Hotel in St. Paul, Minnesota, will provide tribal leaders with the best information and most available to help increase telecommunications services in native communities.
