Nothing ia more special to him than the starting of a bear track. Thedogs rigor drift the boars scent long before the hunter cuts his tracks. They begin to open slowly at first with a long, deep bawl, which slowly turns to chops as his truck creeps up the canyon at first light, The hunter knows whats ahead and unloads his best strike hound as the and frequency of barking Soon all four hounds are off chopping their way up a ledge along a rock face in the Book Cliffs. The hunter runs behind knowing the boar will prob- his dogs, for this boar ably ledge-ou- t remembers the hounds as well. Near the top of that sandstone face, the houndsman finds his dogs up under a ledge where the climbed out and left them scratching and clawing at the rock, He quickly starts throwing dogs up the ledge and they fire and disap- pear down the tracks. By the time hunter scrambles atop the ridge the music of his hound's blend with thesurroundingsandareioettohim. He'll have to locate the hounds and the tree with a receiver for tracking the dog's radio collars. Miles and hours later, the hunter finds his four hounds bawling up a sixty foot fur tree against a sand- stone cliff in a distant canyon. The ot' chocolate boar is only ten foot up fur tree's trunk. The boar pops his jaws and slobbers, making some attempt to warn offthe hunter as he sets his camera pack on the ground- what a scene, what a picture. After photographing the event, he shoulders his camera pack and begins to leash dugs. It's not easy for ot hole-in-on- e. In the early eighties, Utah houndsmen had utilized places like the Book Cliffs to run bear from April 1 through earfy October. How-pile- d ever, their recreational, sumptive sport has seen continued reduction in pursuit days over the years, from 160 days afield to around 51 days ofuse (Novemberwas opened years back to bear pursuit but pro-th- e vides little or no use by houndsmen aa most bean are in den.), non-con-bo- ar Houndsmen had petitioned UDWR for an additional two weeks or more of bear pursuit in June but were rejected. This additional time afield could actually save bears, time and money for UDWR, and property damage by bears to the public in campgrounds and on livestock depredation (see past articles on condi-th- e tuning). Yet WildlifeSenricea(ADC) harvest nearly half the bears killed in Utah annually because of safety or damage reasons. Wouldn't it be more desirable to haze aome of these animals away from problem areas with hounds rather than waste them on depredation kill?
