Thompsen. who grew up in rural Spring City, Utah, always wanted to fly. In 1941 he was accepted into the Air Force aa an aviation cadet. In 1943, he waa notified he would be on a special serving as a mission. At 23, Thompsen was one of the older men on the crew. He was ason signed to the position of a 7 Flying Fortress. The ten-mteam was given sealed orders they were not to open until 11)0 point of no return. It was tho August 17. 1943 snd was delayed forever foggy; take-of- f aa hour. Loaded with 5.000 pounds of bomba and 13 machine guns, the of s huge plane flew on the tail-enformation deep into Germany. It wasn long before they encountered German planes who began shooting at them. Thompsen was sitting in the cockpit. "As soon as ws saw the Holland coast, I counted 45 enemy planes on just the right side of our plane." The crew could hear bullets coming through the plane. A 20mm cannon struck tho craft. An engine waa out, a wing engulfed in flames, a fire blazing somewhere in the back of the plane, and the phone and radio dead. The crew decided to bail out Free-fallin- g from 18,000 feet. Thompsen pulled the cord to the chute whan he oew furrows of ground below and made a safe landing, but his ankle waa broken.
